Criteria for Entry into
the King's Sixth Form
Completed registration
forms should be submitted as early as possible in the academic
year preceding entry. You can view or download a sixth form
registration form for September
2009.
The entry procedure
is as follows:
- Parents discuss the matter with the student's
current Head and sign the registration form to indicate that they
have done so.
- Once the registration form has been received,
a report on the student's aptitude for a demanding sixth form
course is requested from his/her current Head.
- Subject to a satisfactory report, applicants
are invited to meet the heads of those subjects which they are
interested in taking in the sixth form. Interview dates will be
notified in advance.
- Subject to satisfactory reports from the heads
of subjects, an offer of a place may be made, dependent on GCSE
results.
There are three criteria
which all candidates for entry into the sixth form at King's must
satisfy.
- Academic achievement
and potential - all candidates should obtain at least 7 GCSEs
at A*, A or B grades. A or A* grades are normally expected (and
in some cases are required) in the subjects that will be studied
at AS or A2.
- Industry and determination
- candidates must have demonstrated that they are capable of working
to deadlines and meeting academic expectations of their teachers,
commensurate with their potential.
- Attitude - candidates'
school record during Years 10 and 11 must have indicated a readiness
to work hard and a willingness to accept the authority of the
school.
Candidates who meet all of
these criteria will qualify for entry to the sixth form, subject
to the availability of places. Those who fail to meet these criteria
will not normally be admitted to the sixth form.
In some cases, those who
narrowly fail to meet one of the above criteria may be admitted
to the sixth form following consultation between the Headmaster
and the parents. If admission is granted, students must expect to
have to give undertakings for their future work and/or conduct and
to meet specific work targets during the lower sixth.
For all students, transfer
from lower sixth to upper sixth will be conditional upon their record
during the lower sixth form and upon AS examination results.
These criteria will be reviewed
from time to time and adjusted if necessary in order to maintain
the high standards of effort and achievement generally associated
with students at The King's School.
