The Headmasters' and Headmistresses' Conference
HMC website
HMC was founded by Edward Thring, celebrated
Headmaster of Uppingham, who in 1869 invited thirty-seven fellow
headmasters to meet at his house to consider forming a school society
and annual conference. Twelve headmasters accepted his invitation
and the embryonic HMC was formed.
Membership now totals rather more than 250 individuals (it is the
head rather than the school who is the member of HMC) as well as
additional and overseas members. Each year the member heads (headmasters
and headmistresses of member schools) meet in early October to discuss
and debate matters of mutual concern.
Eligibility for membership depends upon the degree of independence
enjoyed by the head and the school and the academic standards obtaining
in the school, which are reflected by both the academic success
at public examination and the proportion of the pupils who are in
the sixth form.
