The links with the cathedral go back to 1541,
when Henry VIII founded both the cathedral and the school. The cathedral
still has strong links with the school. The Dean is ex officio a
Governor of the school and other members of Chapter also serve on
the governing body.
The Chapter not only allows the school to use
the magnificent setting of the cathedral for its end of term services,
but also encourages participation by the school in other ways in
the life of the cathedral. Some King's students are choristers
and many students, parents, staff and governors regularly worship
at the cathedral. The school is remembered specifically on the
first Sunday of each term in the prayers at Eucharist and members
of the school participate in the service on that day.
A committee of pupils and staff meet once a term
to plan the programme of worship for the following term. Pupils
of all ages are encouraged to work with members of staff in designing
the end of term services. In this way students are involved in
the planning, the delivery and the content of the services.
For some students such services are their first
experience of community worship; for others they bring variety
into an already familiar Christian experience.
