Asperger's chess - "The Kings of
King's"
As the result of a proposal for King's to
host a chess club after school for a number of
chess-playing boys with Asperger's syndrome the club began in October
2004.
"Every Thursday, between 4.15 and 5.45, we host and socialise
with on average eight boys. Refreshments are provided. Around eight
to twelve King's students, girls and boys, from the 4th, 5th and
Lower Sixth years, arrive to help, play and coach. The King's lads
and lasses are remarkable for their care, interest, kindness, patience,
humour and sociability. The aim is to enjoy chess and each other's
company, and to improve the quality of play. Sometimes, we play
paired chess (2-a-side) to promote good decision-making over moves."
"Recently we have vacated the Old Library
and adopted the IT room as our new home. Here we can play chess
against a computer programme with very many different levels
of play and access tutorials and quizzes. Again students are
paired to think together as they play against the MACHINE on
five different computers."
"Responses by the visitors to a questionnaire
mentioned that they liked the Club because it meant they met
new people, had fun, and improved their chess. The name of the
Club was voted for after various submissions by the visitors
and 'The Kings of King's' won."
