Outdoor education is very important and promotes self-confidence as well as giving students an understanding of the requirements of leadership.

Early in the Michaelmas term, students in the Removes spend two days at Patterdale Outdoor Pursuits Centre (more information and photos). Besides enjoying a number of outdoor sports, pupils have an unrivaled opportunity to get to know staff and to make new friends.

At the end of their third year all boys take part in an outward bound week in the Lake District. This includes expeditions in the mountains, canoeing, sailing, rock climbing, orienteering and many other sports.

Many students take part in the CCF and Duke of Edinburgh's Award Scheme and these activities contribute much towards the development of leadership skills. Adventurous training and expedition work are major elements in the courses undertaken.

During each year many holiday activities are offered which contribute to these wider aspects of students' education. Skiing trips are regularly run, as are expeditions further afield. In the summer of 2001, for example a group of students visited Romania to work in an orphanage and a group of students from King's and Queen's Schools went on an expedition to Ecuador.

A voluntary activity holiday takes place each summer at Plas Menai. This is open to fourth year pupils and paves the way for the outdoor education programme they will meet when they join the senior school.

An annual skiing holiday, with staff from both the senior and junior schools offers a great opportunity for all those who enjoy winter sports to hone their skills on the Austrian Alps.

Dee white water - view the photos
Andrew Hales, David Wynne and Matthew Harle furthered their experience and skills on white water by paddling the Dee from Serpent's Tail rapid to the bottom of Eddylines section. Well done to all.
