CCF (RAF) Ground Training Competition
Thirteen members of The King's School CCF (RAF) attended the regional Ground Training Competition on Sunday 16 November. Only twelve schools can take part each year so just to be invited to take part is an achievement.

They had to compete in seven different disciplines, including RAF Knowledge and shooting. In both of these events the section came third but particular mention must be made of Cadet Ben Moss whose superb grouping in the shooting meant that he achieved the top individual score in the competition and is awarded a certificate.

Overall the cadets came sixth but this was a very young team and all but two of them will be back next year to compete again. Many of the teams taking part this year were from RAF sections, which are more than twice the size of King's and were composed entirely of NCOs, so sixth is a very encouraging result and one upon which the cadets will be keen to improve next year.

Top ten finish in English Junior Fell Running
Fell Running ChampionshipsLast weekend, James Ellis (5DL) competed in North Yorkshire, in the last of a series of 6 fell races, which made up this year’s English Junior Fell Running Championship.  James ran very consistently throughout the series, to finish overall in 6th position in the U16 boys’ category.  James put in many hours of hard training, slogging away in all weathers, on some precipitous hills and often in wondrous muck and mud, to achieve this result.  Disappointingly for him, he missed out on selection for the England team, by just one place.

Fell running is not exactly at the forefront of athletics. It tends not to make front-page news, and top national fell runners don’t become celebrity household names.  But perhaps that is all part of its alternative appeal.  However the introduction this year of the first English Schools Fell Running Championship, may whet the appetite of some newcomers to the sport.  On Sunday (28th Sept), Sedbergh School hosted this event, and James and his younger brother, Michael Ellis (RmSR), took to the Sedbergh Hills in their King’s vests.  Over challenging courses, Michael finished 16th in the year 7 race, and James, unfortunately hampered by muscle cramps, still managed 10th place in the year 10& 11 race.  Hopefully King’s will be able to field a team for 2009.

Head Boy of 1939 returns to King’s 70 years later

Head Boys 1939 and 2008The King’s School was delighted to welcome Mr Tony Ashforth for lunch and a tour of the school this week. Mr Ashforth was head boy at the school in 1938-39 when it was located in Victorian buildings in St Werburgh Street adjacent to the Cathedral.

Mr Ashforth went on to serve his country with the Royal Artillery Corps during World War 2.

Mr Ashforth toured the school visiting the memorial stained glass window transferred from the original school building and the Roll of Honour bronze tablets recording those Old King’s Scholars who died in the two world wars. He then went on to view a small exhibition of old photographs of the school. Mr Ashforth also recorded his memories of his school days helping to create the first oral history for the school archives collections.

Mr Chris Ramsey, Head Master said, “ We are honoured to be able to welcome Mr Ashforth back to his school and show him some of our archive items which would remind him of his time at the school”.

Five King’s students glide to success
During the school summer holidays, five students at The King’s School were awarded gliding scholarships with RAF.

Elliot Carty of  Prestatyn , James Hopkinson of Rhosemor, William Moreland of Great Sutton, Ben Moss of Rossett and Richard Wynne of Tremeirchion, all RAF cadets at The King’s School flew solo during the prestigious  scholarship courses.

Flying Scholarships

Mrs Karen Shapland, Contingent Commander of the King’s School Combined Cadet Force said, “I am delighted with the cadets’ achievements. Four of the five cadets are only 16 years old so not even eligible to drive a car, yet not only did they all fly solo, all five cadets were recommended for advanced flying training, which makes this one of our most successful years. I should like to congratulate them and wish them every success with the application for flying awards.”

Pony Club Tetrathlon Champion
Harry Ashworth (4MP) has become the Boys Intermediate Tetrathlon Champion at the Pony Club Tetrathlon Championships held in August at Hartpury College in Gloucestershire.

Based on the Olympic Modern Pentathlon and following qualifiers all across the UK more than 55 competed at the event with boys aged from 13 to 17.  On the first day Harry had a very good shoot scoring 940 out of 1000 and then swam 235m in 3 minutes. (You try that!) He was well positioned for the next day when he ran 2k in under 7 minutes on a course with some tough hills. The final phase was cross country riding over a course of approximately 1.5miles with fixed obstacles , rather like the Olympic eventing but smaller! Harry rode like a demon and finished with top marks to take the lead after the only other competitor in his way faulted at the water. Harry who is a member of the Cheshire Hunt South Pony Club trains very hard all year round for this event. He will now move up to Open competitions from where many have progressed to Olympic pentathlon.

Harry was also placed 3rd at the Pony Club Intermediate Eventing Championships held in Derbyshire and rode in the Dressage Championships. Sister Sara (ShAR) also qualified for the Eventing Championships and in June was one of youngest ever winners of a British Eventing competition at Llanymynech in Powys.

Dennis and Gee Bee the horses also deserve a carrot!

Successes for Olympic athletes
Congratulations to former King's pupils Tom James and Olivia Whitlam, Olympic rowing finalists. Gold medallist Tom James was a member of the coxless four that beat Australia to the finishing line in a thrilling race. Olivia Whitlam stroked the coxless pair to sixth place.
