Minors County Track and Field Championships
Seven Remove pupils were selected to represent Cheshire in this competition held at Warrington. Cameron Thompson was 1st in the hurdles, making him Cheshire Champion; Sam Arshad-Roberts was 6th, with a new personal best, in the 800 metres; Peter Boothroyd was 3rd in the long jump; Tom Okell came 2nd in the long jump; Ralph Elsegood was 3rd in the shot; Sara Ashworth was 6th in the 1500 metres; and Alice Carr was 8th in the 1500 metres.

UK Junior Mathematical Challenge and Junior Olympiad
113 students in the Removes and Shells, approximately half of our entrants, gained cerificates in this year's Challenge. 29 of these were gold certificates which are awarded to the top 6% of entrants. Over 240,000 students sat the Challenge.

Matthew Temple (ShRH) received an additional certificate for achieving the highest mark in the school. Matthew and William Marshall (ShJK) have qualified to take part in the Junior Olympiad. To qualify for this they must have scored very highly indeed in the Challenge. Matthew (pictured below, left) was awarded a bronze medal for his performance in the Junior Olympiad, which is an outstanding achievement. The picture on the right shows some of the other pupils with their certificates for the Challenge.

Unveiling of the 1st XI Cricket Honours Board
During the lunch interval in the 1st XI match against the CAOKS team the unveiling of the new 1stXI Cricket Honours Board in the Hudson-Owen Pavilion took place.  The board was unveiled by Mr Neeves and Mr Mellor (top photo), both of whom have been in charge of the school's 1st XI cricket team, after introductory remarks by the Headmaster. The third picture down shows former King's students William Wilson-Theaker, David Atkin, Tom Bellis and Andrew Sissons, all of whom have distinguished performances listed on the new board. In the photo as well are Mr Neal, current master in charge of 1st XI cricket, and Mr Hutton, who has also been involved with senior cricket. Mr Neeves, Mr Mellor and Mr Hutton are retiring at the end of this school year after a combined 102 years' service of the school.

CCF Gliding Scholarship Course
Elliot Carty (L6BH) attended a residential gliding scholarship course over the Easter holidays. The weather was dreadful and they were only able to do a couple of days' gliding but Elliot was one of the few people on his course who still managed to fly solo despite having so little time in the air. Because he did so well on his gliding course, he has also been recommended for further flying training so is now eligible to apply for a flying award (formerly known as a flying scholarship).

A further four cadets were nominated for gliding scholarships over the summer and all 4 were successful. This is the largest number of glding scholarships we have been awarded in one year for some time. The cadets are: James Hopkinson and William Moreland of the 5th form and Ben Moss and Richard Wynne of the 4th form. Potentially, all four could be piloting a glider, solo, before they're old enough to drive!

Ben has also been awarded a place on the highly selective and prestigious air cadet leadership course, this summer - there is approximately one place on this course for every two CCF RAF sections in the UK.

Duke of Edinburgh Bronze Award training exercise
Fifty one third and fourth form students were involved in the exercise around Llangollen this weekend. Blessed with better-than-expected weather the students undertook training in map reading and camp craft, as well as undertaking some challenging hill walking. All returned safe and well, if a little tired (especially those who had been at Ullswater taking part in the Third Form Outdoor Activities Week).

Karting champion
Seb Morris (RmSG) has already won Cheshire, Wigan and Dragon Kart Club championships. He recently took second place in a field of thirty at a Gold Cup meeting. Competitors travelled from as far away as Scotland to take part. He will be back to win it next year!

Week beginning Monday 23 June

  1. Teamwork
  2. Leadership
  3. CCF General Knowledge
  4. Watermanship
  5. Map & Compass
  6. Endurance & Perseverance
  7. Drill and Turnout
  8. Skill at Arms

North West Swimming Champion
Over the past two weekends Will Slater (ShGA), a member of the City of Chester Swimming Club, has competed at the North West Region Swimming Championships. He has swum personal bests to achieve gold medals in 100m freestyle and 100m backstroke and a bronze medal in 200m freestyle in the 13 year old age group. In these events, for the first time, Will has achieved the necessary qualifying times for the national championships which are held annually in Sheffield at the end of July.

L6th form lecture on laser technology - view some photos
On Tuesday of this week the L6th physicists were treated to a lecture demonstration on the use of laser technology in modern society by Mr Ray Davies of the Photonics Academy of St Asaph.

He demonstrated projects ranging from the world's most secure combination lock to laser operated seismographs and prosthetic hands - all invented and made by 6th formers. He was able to offer six expenses-paid places to his Summer schools this year and it is hoped that some of our students will be able to take advantage of this wonderful opportunity to work at the cutting edge of this exciting new technology.

District Minors Athletics Championships
A fantastic team performance, in which several Championship records were broken, resulted in the Remove boys' athletics squad achieving second place overall. They were narrowly defeated by 3 points by a strong Christleton squad. A high spirited performance by the girls' squad saw them achieve a commendable 7th place overall.

Notable individual performances were

  • Cameron Thompson broken the Championship hurdles record in his heat. He then hurried over to the high jump, which he won. And then he returned to the track to win the hurdles final.
  • Alistair Coley, Cameron Thompson, Peter Boothroyd and Henry Makings won the 4 x 100m relay and broke the Championship record in the process.
  • Peter Boothroyd won the 1500m final, missing the Championship record by 1 second.
  • Tom Okell won the long jump and beat the existing Championship record by 4 cm.
  • Ralph Elsegood came 2nd in the shot; Sam Arshad-Roberts came 2nd in the 800m; and Rudi Macloskey qualified for the 200m final.
  • Alice Carr came 2nd in the 1500m; Sara Ashworth came 3rd in the 1500m; and the girls' relay team came 3rd in their final.

Junior Maths Challenge
All of the Remove and Shell pupils sat the tests. They achieved 29 gold cerificates, 41 silver cerificates and 43 bronze certificates. Two students, Matthew Temple (ShRH) and William Marshall (ShJK), have qualified for the Junior Mathematical Olympiad.

CCF Military Skills Competition
A team of CCF cadets from King's attended a military skills competition at St Bees School in Cumbria. The team came fourth overall out of a total of thirteen teams that took part in the
eight events.  They won the tug o'war, orienteering and wall climbing. Team members were Joe Wood (4SP), Ian Prossor (ShJK), Cameron Luckas (ShRH), Peter O'Brien (ShRH) and Harry Chappell (ShEH).

Week beginning Monday 19 May

The School was proud to welcome the Ambassador of Madagascar. Dr Ravaoarimanana toured the Junior and Senior Schools meeting pupils, staff and Governors.

visit by Madagascar ambassador

The School was launching a fundraising initiative to build a school in Madagascar in the next year. The Ambassador hopes to return later this year to sign a twinning agreement to officially commemorate the project between King’s and the school in Madagascar. In July 2009, 24 students from King's will visit the new school and help in various projects.

Chris Ramsey, Headmaster, said, “The whole school is involved in this fundraising project, it is one of the biggest ever taken on by the school. We are hoping to build a 3 classroom primary school in a rural area where education provision is non existent. This facility will give the children in local community the basic education they desperately need. It is fabulous that 24 of our students will visit the school in July as part of an expedition to Madagascar.”

The proposal is to build a new cyclone-proof school with 3 classrooms in the Rural Commune of Ibity (170km from the capital Antananarivo). In 2003 the school built by the children’s parents was destroyed by a cyclone. Originally the school had 216 pupils. Since then the children have been taught in the village church. More recently the local community built a tiny two classroom school with their own resources, labour and local materials but conditions are very basic, with a mud floor and a corrugated iron roof which leaks badly.

The school has one teacher provided by the Department of Education and 95 pupils. A further 100 children from this village and neighbouring communities will attend the new school once the shortage of places is resolved. Additional classes have to be run in the afternoon currently to accommodate numbers due to the shortage of space.

Children access the school on foot – some of them travelling a considerable distance. Widespread poverty means that most of them have nothing to eat or drink between leaving home and their return several hours later. The local community is extremely poor and the people live in basic homes that they build themselves. They have no electricity or running water and little furniture – apart from plaited mats and sometimes wooden beds.

The head of the local representative of the Department of Education has promised to send teachers once the new school is built. The total cost of building a new school is estimated to be £9,650 with the local community providing £3,465 worth of materials and labour; the remaining cost of £6,185 is being sought from an external provider via the Madagascar Development Fund. It is these funds of £6,185 that The King’s School wishes to raise.

First meeting of the Education Forum
Chris Woodhead, the former Chief Inspector of Schools and newspaper columnist, was the speaker at our first Education Forum, held on the 10th April. Invited guests from schools across Chester were welcomed to King's by the Headmaster.

Chris Woodhead with the Headmaster

Invited guests, teachers and some members of the 6th form had a lively discussion in a questions and answers session by Chris Woodhead which led to some stimulating debates!

We are hoping to organise further education forums during the next year and
open invitation to parents too.

English Schools Track and Field Cup
The School entered four teams in this event which drew competitors from ten schools. Each team member has to do two events. Points between 1 and 28 are awarded for the performance of each competitor in each event. The school had some excellent individual scores and personal bests. Our highest individual points score was Matthew Spencer's 23 points in the shot putt. The intermediate boys and junior boys teams each came third. The intermediate girls and junior girls teams each came sixth.

National yachting champion

RYA champions

Harry Yeoward (ShGA) (with his crew Nick Elsdon) won the RYA (Royal Yachting Association) Eric Twiname 2008 Championships for Mirrors at the weekend. After no wind on Saturday he won it on Sunday with 3 straight wins. Virtually all the GBR sailors going to the Olympics this summer have as youngers sailed in this competition. View the detailed results on the RYA web site. Harry has been training and aspiring to win this for the last 7 months, hence training most weekends. This victory means a lot to Harry as he has had to give up playing in team sports and parties!

Birth announcement

Henrietta with one of her ducklings

At lunchtime today, Tuesday, we are delighted to announce that our school duck, now named Henrietta, hatched her ducklings. Mother and babies are doing well! We are not quite certain at this stage exactly how many ducklings she has in total but at least 3 have been seen. It is expected that she will remain outside the dining hall door for at least another day before trying to get to the pond.

Pupils are asked to take care when passing by and try not to disturb Henrietta.

We will keep you updated with her progress!!

UK Intermediate Mathematical Challenge and Mathematical Olympiad
Siobhan Barnard (4SR) has been selected for the National Mathematics Summer School as a results of her outstanding performance in this year's UK Intermediate Mathematical Challenge. The summer school is only open to about forty of the UK's most talented mathematicians and is the first step to becoming a member of the International Olympiad team.

Siobhan, Joe Dillamore (4FV) and Peter Johnstone (4DL) took part last term in the Intermediate Mathematical Olympiad, which is an invitation-only competition following on from the Intermediate Challenge. Qualifying in itself is an an achievement. Sobhan and Joe have been awarded certificates of merit and Peter received a certificate of participation.

Biodiversity Group
The pond in the quadrangle is now in the final stages of completion. A number of projects are under way to increase the variety of habitats, plants and animals within the school grounds.

Winner at Chester Music Festival

Chester Music Festival

Selim Ungut (3JM) was awarded the prestigious Daisy Riley trophy and prize at this year’s Chester Competitive Musical Festival for his magnificent performance of Bach’s piano concerto in D Minor. Selim was accompanied by The King’s School Senior Strings Ensemble and competed against some of the best musicians from all over the North West.

The King’s School Piano Trio consisting of Selim Ungut (Piano), Hiroshi Amako (Violin) and Rachel Dixon (Cello) also won their class at the same festival.

Director of Music James Millard said “We are very privileged to have a specialist tutor as Head of Strings who prepares the students for competitions such as this one. The standard of Strings music at King’s is outstanding as we have development groups throughout the lower school which enable our senior musicians to perform at the highest levels.”

Week beginning Monday 28 April

Army Scholarship
Thomas Pearson-Jones (5MP) has been provisonally awarded an Army Scholarship - provisional because it is conditional on his attaining certain scores in his GCSE exams in the summer. Only a limited number of Scholarships are awarded each year from a large number of applicants, so this is a very well earned achievement by Thomas.

Cheshire U15 Hockey Squad crowned National Champions

U15 Cheshire Hockey Team

On Sunday 20th April 2008 Cheshire Under 15 Boys Hockey Team were crowned National County Champions at the Highfields Sports Centre in Nottingham and presented with the winners’ trophy by Martin Gotheridge, President of England Hockey. The squad is drawn from a range of schools and clubs across the county but with a central core representing The King’s School Chester and Weaverham High School, and Deeside Ramblers and Bowdon Hockey Clubs.

The all conquering side have remained unbeaten all year in their preliminary warm-up games against Shropshire and local club sides, progressing to topping the Northern Counties Championship with 5 wins from 5, scoring 29 goals and conceding none and finally topping the National Finals’ Table with 3 wins and one draw, scoring 11 and conceding 5.

Team manager Andy Lear said of his players’ achievements;
“I am absolutely amazed by the outstanding level of commitment that I have seen this year from a squad of talented players who have been rightly crowned the best in England. They have been a joy to manage and represented their schools, clubs and county with pride, receiving plaudits from officials, opponents and supporters on the skill, teamwork and fair play that they demonstrated all weekend. Such is the ability of this team that the majority of them will go forward to train in the newly formed U16 North Manchester Junior Regional Performance Centre later this season where they will be prepared for potential England selection in October.

Team members from King's were George Cope, Adam Dunbavand, Edward Peel and Jonathan Verity.

Young Enterprise
Our two Young Enterprise teams are ICE and BLOQUE. Over the past few months students have been running weekly board meetings, writing business plans/company reports, preparing financial statements, managing money, marketing and selling at trade fairs. To be successful the students have had to work together as a team and learn how to communicate effectively.

Twenty teams from schools across Chester attended the final presentation evening in a very plush lecture theatre at the Bank of America. View an album of photos. The company trading as ICE, managed by Simon Younger and Max Ankers, took first prize for the Best Company report and also were awarded the Best Company overall which means they now go forward to the next round. This is a fantastic achievement and is testimony to the hard work of the whole team. To maintain enthusiasm and commitment for a project which runs this long, alongside AS exam pressures indicates just what can be achieved.

Radiation risk - physics lecture
The 3rd form were treated to a physics lecture on the relative risk posed to health by the microwave radiation emitted by mobile phones and their transmitters versus the ultraviolet radiation used by sunbeds. The words ‘physics’ and ‘treat’ are not normally synonymous but Dr. Pete Cole, of Liverpool University, made a potentially dry topic come alive with tales of his encounters with gangsters in seedy hostelries, and worryingly realistic impressions of Scandinavian researchers and Liverpudlian solaria clients. On the serious side, the students gained an expert insight into the public perception of science upon which they focus in preparation for their modular science GCSEs, and our thanks go to Dr. Cole for delivering a superb and informative lecture. Handouts of the slides can be obtained here

Head of School team
The team for the next academic year will be George Roberts as Head of School, Dylan Phillips as Head of Boys and Harriet Evans as Head of Girls.

Associated Board Music Examinations
Twenty four students recently passed exams, covering the whole range of grades 1 to 8. Five of these passes were Distinctions and ten were Merits. At the top of the grades range Lara Goodwin and Tatsuhiro Nomaguchi achieved grade 8 in violin, Edward Andrade achieved grade 8 in clarinet and Selim Ungut achieved grade 8 in piano.

District Tennis Champions
The girls' team of Claire Bayliss, Catherine Barnard, Kathryn Willimas and Amy Bellis won a closely-fought match against Queens to become U19 champions.

County of Lancaster Shooting Competition
A small team from Kings School CCF attended the Northwest Target Rifle Competition held at Altcar Rifle Range near Southport. The team consisted of Captain Sgt Libby Anderson, Jun Kamakari, Ed Hume, Fred Deas, Victoria Anderson and Annabel Kenworthy.

They won first female and second female, they came second in the four man team and second in the cadet pairs. This is some achievement out of 348 cadets that attended this meeting and 22 teams.

Week beginning Monday 14 April

International chess player
Davin Menon (Sh JK) has been selected to play chess for the Welsh Junior Team against the Ukraine in Kiev during the May midterm break and in the European Union Junior Championship in Murek, Austria, during the summer holidays in August.

Fund-raising for the Madagascar expedition
The fund-raising event organised by Jonathan Sears (5AH) last weekend in Whitchurch, Shropshire, for the Madagascar Expedition was very successful. He raised a superb £1,100 profit after costs from a dinner dance, with a swing band providing the entertainment. He got everything organised - printing flyers and tickets, getting the caterer, setting up the room etc and arranging a prize auction; the auction is what made the huge difference to the profit.

Jonathan is involved in organising more events. Two of the larger prize sponsors Carden Park Hotel, and the Quay Hotel have said they can provide vouchers later in the year for events he will hold jointly with the rest of the group, and he has been discussing with his group the forthcoming disco for 1st - 3rd years. Last weekend's event was largely for Whitchurch friends as he lives so far from Chester. Read the article about Jonathan's fund-raising in the The Whitchurch Herald.

Success in business for former pupil
Jeremy Casey (left 1990) is now managing director of an overseas property company called therightmoveabroad.com (website http://www.therightmoveabroad.com). He started the business (based in Cheshire) four years ago and it continues to grow from strength to strength. This week he sold BBC Sports Personality of the Year, boxer Joe Calzaghe, his seventh property through the company. (Joe is fighting his biggest fight of his career on April 19th in Vegas). Jeremy was always a keen sportsman at school and showed a particular interest in cricket, going on to play at County level.

Hockey champions in prospect
The King’s School will be well represented at this weekend’s Boys’ Hockey County Championship Finals in Nottingham with George Cope, Adam Dunbavand, Edward Peel and Jonathan Verity being selected for the Cheshire U15 team. The team are Northern Counties Champions and as such will play against Hampshire, Nottinghamshire and Devon. The King’s pupils will also be joining Harry Dodd-Moore and Ben and William Leaman in mid-May when Deeside Ramblers U15s travel to Canterbury to play in the England Hockey Junior Cup Finals against Canterbury, High Wycombe and Beeston Hockey Clubs.

Cheshire rugby champions
Five pupils from Removes were part of the Chester RUFC Under 12's squad which won the Cheshire Cup this weekend.  Matthew Anthony, Jack Barber, George Nott, Tom Okell and Adam Young represented Chester Under 12's in the tournament at Caldy RUFC.  Competing against 16 other teams, the Chester team won the Cup for the fourth time in five years (Under 12, Under 10, Under 9 and Under 8 levels !)

Cheshire County Swimming Championships
Alice Carr (RmMT) achieved bronze medals in the 1oom butterfly, 200m butterfly, 50m backstroke and 50m freestyle. She was also placed in three other events and achieved several personal bests. All of this meant that she came fifth overall in her age category.

Cheshire Scout Hike
Last weekend saw a number of King’s pupils participating in the 42nd annual Cheshire Scout Hike. For those unfamiliar with the Hike, 11 to 18 year old Scouts from across Cheshire and the Wirral are confronted with having to plot a route and hike distances of between 30km and 55km over two days. Carrying full 11kg backpacks complete with tent, sleeping bag, stove and all provisions to last two days, the Scouts hike distances further than is required for most of the Duke of Edinburgh Awards and in just two days. Bearing in mind that DoE participants must be at least 14 years old to even enter for the Bronze Award, it is quite an achievement for 11 and 12 year old Scouts to complete the Cheshire Hike. Removes pupils Amelia Barry, Oliver Church, Alistair Coley, Ralph Elsegood, George Hutchins and James Ryder from Bunbury, Frodsham and Tarporley Scouts, successfully completed the junior section of the hike which this year started in Sandbach and finished in Knutsford. Freezing temperatures, waking up to snow covered tents on the Sunday morning and hiking through hail storms were just some of the challenges that the Scouts actually faced.

North West Junior Inter Regional Rowing Championships
This is the first opportunity for young future GB rowers to showcase their full potential against the best in the country in their age range. At the trials, hosted by Northwich Rowing Club, over 300 athletes were trying to gain a place in the 81-strong regional team. After a hard day's racing Sam Lewis (5VA), James Kinsey (5MP), Sam Wilson (5PN), Mohammed Sajid (5EW), Ollie Holt (5VA), Edward Hind (5PN), Inigo Atkin (5AH), Alex Gorman (5VA) and Charles Barry (L6PF) have been chosen to represent the North West regional rowing team and will be competing in the eight, four and coxless four class ar the Championships. For more information about the Championships you can visit their website at http://www.jirr.org

CCF in the North West Region First Aid Competition
Twenty teams took part in the Competition and The King's School team came 4th out of the CCFs with 83 points. King's competitors were Sgts Justin Witter and Jun-Ichiro Kawakami; Cpl Edward Hind; and Cdt Ben Moss.

Week beginning Monday 7 April

Tesco Computers for Schools 2008
Once again the Wickson Library is collecting the Tesco Computers for Schools vouchers and would greatly appreciate your support. The senior school collected over 14,000 vouchers last year which were banked for use in 2008 so we have a good start towards this year’s scheme. This year we are hoping to collect enough vouchers to buy a good quality digital camcorder which will be available for loan from the library.

Vouchers are available in Tesco stores until Sunday 11th May 2008, please bring them into school by Friday 20th June.

A collection box is available just inside the Wickson Library for senior school pupils to deposit their vouchers.
