Week beginning Monday 14 March

Cheshire Schools U19 Badminton Tournament
In this year's tournament, held at King's, we entered two teams and played against five other teams - Helsby, Wilmslow, Bishop's Blue Coats, and Sir John Dean's A and B.

The King's A team played well and proceeded to the final. Even after a "magical" performance by the team we lost the final to Sir John Deans A to come runners up again, as we have for the past few years. The team consisted of Andrew Brown, Tristan Thomas, Phil Harvey and Joseph Lam.

There was a good performance by the younger, less experienced B team - Matthew Wilkinson, Peter Johnstone, Michael Hau and Simon Younger.

National Schools Hockey Championship
The school played Millfield in the national quarter finals at Belle Vue, Manchester. With our captain badly injured and barely able to walk we knew it was going to be tough. The King's team was out-played by a very strong side and eventually lost 6-2. Our goals were from William Mumme-Young (penalty) and Ben Crooks.

Although we were well below par it was a commendable effort under the circumstances and completed a fine season for the team. To put the performance into perspective Millfield had only conceded 1 goal in 9 matches to reach the quarter finals.

English Schools' Basketball Competition
The sixth form basketball team competed in the last 16 of this tournament, held in Pickering, North Yorkshire.

Red Nose Day
The total raised so far by last Friday's events is £548.

Week beginning Monday 7 March

National Schools Hockey Championship
The U18 boys' team has drawn Millfield School in the quarter finals. The match is to take place on Sunday 13 March at Belle Vue, Manchester - the venue for the Commonwealth Games. The team would very much appreciate support. The standard will be very high and the match will be well worth watching. Details are available from Mr Price.

Inter-Counties Cross Country Championships
This was held at Castle Park, Frodsham. Siobhan Barnard finished 8th in the Minors, Girls. This placed her 3rd in Cheshire and 1st in Chester and District. George Cope finished 10th in the Minors, Boys. This placed him 3rd in Cheshire and 1st in Chester and District. James Ellis finished 23rd in the same category as George. This placed him 8th in Cheshire and 2nd in Chester and District.

Poppy Appeal Award
The school has received a framed certificate in ackowledgement of our contribution to the 2004 Royal British Legion annual appeal.

Week beginning Monday 28 February

World Schools' Ski Championships
Piers Lomax and Thomas Doerr represented England in the championships held at Windischgarsten, Austria, in February.

North West Schools Hockey Championship
The U18 boys team won the final against Merchant Taylors by an amazing 9 goals to 0.

International hockey
William Mummé-Young has been selected for the England U18 team and played in the starting eleven in a recent international in Spain.

William follows a long line of brothers who have captained the King’s 1st XI and have gone on to play at the highest level. Their contribution to King’s school hockey has been immense and they have inspired some golden years for the King’s 1st XI taking us to the national finals four times during their combined captaincies. We hope that William can help achieve the same feat this season (no pressure!).

KSPA donation helping to equip the new music school
The Parents’ Association have made a magnificent donation towards equipping the recording studio in the New Music School. The funds will allow the purchase of a Mackie 16 channel mixing desk, aYamaha portable 8 channel digital recorder, a Motu computer interface
Drawmer Compressor, Lexicon effects units, and AKG and Audio Technica vocal, instrumental and drum kit microphones.

Recent achievements by members of the RAF section of the CCF
Gliding scholarships have been awarded to Corporal Aaron Ferguson and Junior Corporals Amanda Scott and James Marsden. These cadets will attend a week-long course at an RAF Gliding School where they will learn to fly a glider up to solo standard.

Corporal Adam James has been awarded a two-week RAF Flying Scholarship which will allow him to train up to solo standard on board a powered aircraft. Corporal Aaron Ferguson has been awarded the Royal Navy Special Flying Award in the powered category. This is a two-week course allowing him to develop his flying skills in a powered aircraft.

Successful day at The "Wycliffe Big Head"
King’s rowers were dominant at their first competition of 2005 held on the Gloucester-Sharpness canal. The event attracts most major schools and universities from the western side of the country. Despite strong opposition from Bristol University, Radley College and King’s School Worcester, our 1st VIII was in unbeatable form here, retaining the event’s “Head Crew” title, setting a new course record in the process.

  • on Thursday lunch-time there will be a Pop Idol (or is it the X-Factor?) audition - talent will be assessed by our own Simon Cowell (Mr Wheeler), Sharon Osborne (Mrs Gareh) and Louis Walsh (Ed Lister of U6JL)

RAF helicopter visit
There was great excitement when an RAF Squirrel helicopter landed on the playing fields at the King’s School at lunchtime on Friday, 21 January. The helicopter had come from the Defence Helicopter Flying School at RAF Shawbury. After being taught the basics about helicopters by the pilot, members of both sections of the CCF were allowed to look around it.

Both the U14 XI and the 1st XI reached these finals and played very strong teams from Altrincham school on Saturday 8 January. The U14s were beaten 7-1 and the 1st XI won 3-1.

As county champions the 1st XI will play in the north west semi-finals. These are to be held at the school on 6 February.

Tsunami appeal fund-raising
It has been decided by the charities committee (consisting of form charities reps) that money raised would be used to support an orphange in Sri Lanka as part of a project involving a large number of independent schools in the UK. Part of the money will go to buying boats and other things that will help them to rebuild their livelihoods. We hope to suppport the orphanage in the longer term and to build up relationships with communities in the area.

Cipher Challenge results
The Challenge consisted of three encoded messages of increasing difficult. Message 1 was cracked independently by Alex Hinchliffe (4MP) and Elliot Carty (3KL) (along with, of course, numerous members of staff). But congratulations go to Fred Deas (ShSO) for the first correct submission.

Messages 2 and 3 were cracked by Ming-Chee Chung only half an hour after the challenge was published. Mr Browett writes "look on his works, ye mighty, and despair!"

Week beginning Wednesday 5 January (start of term)

Shells' sponsored ergothon
A total of £234.34 was raised by the pupils who took part in the event, and on Wednesday 5th January, the cheque was received by Lady Edwina Grosvenor on behalf of the Esther Benjamins Trust. She about to embark on a 3 month stint in Nepal doing work for that charity, and having briefed the School in assembly on the nature of the charity's work she plans to return to us after her visit to discuss how the money has been spent.
