Week beginning Monday 3 April

Senior Prefects for 2006-7
The following members of the Lower Sixth have been selected:
Fiona Barrow, Chris Blake, Michael Blake, Michael Cannon, Maris Elmore, William Fletcher, Pranav Khamar, Nicola Mollett, William Orchard, Lauren Phillips, David Reid, Hannah Sissons, Oliver Stratford, David Tattersall, Peter Walker and Will Wilson-Theaker.

Leipzig exchange visitors
Five students and a teacher from our exchange partnership school in Leipzig are visiting this week.

Success for Young Enterprise company "M"
The company's Audio Tour Guide to Chester, on CD, has earned the company more than £600 profit. It has been sold to local hotels and bookshops.

The company has already won a Best Business Plan award and at last week's Chester Area Finals they added the Best Presentation and Best Company Report awards to their tally. They went on to be named Best Young Enterprise Company in Chester and Ellesmere Port.

They will now represent Chester in the Cheshire Area Finals in May. (There are more photos on the Young Enterprise page.)

Week beginning Monday 27 March

Charity non-uniform day
Students and staff are paying (a minimum of ) £1 to the charity fund for the privilege of wearing their own choice of clothes on Friday. This is part of a week of events raising money for Teenage Cancer Trust. For more in formation visit their website at www.teenagecancertrust.org

Week beginning Monday 20 March

King's 1st XI won the final of the Boodles ISFA Cup against Millfield School 2-1

Millfield scored after 7 minutes. Jack Minshaw equalised about 15 minutes later, and then scored again in the second half. With a tremendous team effort King's held on to the lead to take the cup.

U14 Girls' Cheshire Hockey Finals Tournament - Thursday 23 March 2006
The girls were runners up in this tournament. They lost out only because the winners, Queen's, had scored one more goal against one of the other teams.

Flying visit
The CCF received a visit from a Lynx helicopter of 815 Naval Air Squadron based at Yeovilton. Photos and report on the CCF page.

Investor in People Award
King's has achieved the prestigious Investor in People award.

UK Intermediate Mathematical Challenge
One hundred pupils from the third and fourth years were entered. There were 195000 entries from across the UK. The school's entrants acquitted themselves well with 43 qualifying for certificates: 5 gold, 19 silver and 19 bronze.

The best individual result was obtained by Jack Webb of 3SO. His score of 105 put him in the top 0.2% of entrants. He has been invited to attempt the next round; the Olympiad (Cayley).

George Kiff (4MH) and David Richardson (4SP) also did well, gaining gold certificates and being placed in the top 1% of the entrants. They have been invited to take part in a Europe-wide round IMOK (Pink Kangaroo).

Liverpool Mathematical Society Competition
This event took place at John Moores University on Saturday 4 March and was sponsored by Barclays. Both of the school's teams walked away with £50, even with depleted numbers - three and four against other teams of five. Team members were Andrew Norman, Chris Blake, Matthew Firth, David Tattersall, Omkar Vedpathak, Pranam Khamar and Matthew Skues. The arrangements were made by Alexei Mackhort but unfortunately the weather conditions prevented him from reaching Liverpool to take part.

Charity
A little love was spread around the school on St Valentine's Day when over forty carnations were delivered by the "Charity Cupids". More than £100 was raised for Chester Aid to the Homeless.

Week beginning Monday 27 February

Snow keeps the school closed
Owing to transport difficulties the school had to be closed on Thursday 2 March. See some photos of the school under its snowy blanket.

ISFA U16 selection
Jack Minshaw has deservedly been selected to represent the full ISFA Under 16 football squad  against Rushden and Diamonds FC and on the tour to Budapest.

Outstanding contribution to the CCF acknowledged
Cadet flight Sergeant Aaron Ferguson (U6CH) has been awarded a prestigious Sir Geoffrey de Havilland Flying Foundation Medal in recognition of his outstanding contribution to the CCF at the school. Aaron and his parents have been invited to attend the award ceremony at the Royal Air Force College Cranwell in July.

U15 district 7-a-side football finalists
The school team of Ben Lamont, Dylan Phillips, Jack O'Donnell, Josh Rudge, James Hill, Rostam Osanlou, Reece Sadiq, Patrick Fletcher and Tom McCormack reached the final after matches with Queen's Park HS, Upton HS and Bishop Heber School. They then lost 0-2 to Bishop's HS in the final.

Week beginning Monday 6 February

Saying it with flowers
Students are being offered the opportunity to send a card, message or flowers to their Valentine for a mere £2. All proceeds will go to a local charity. Flowers will be delivered by the "Charity Cupids" on Valentine's Day.

Week beginning Monday 30 January

Software developer
The successes of sixth former David Tattersall (L6KS) were featured in an article in this week's Chester Standard. David has been writing software in various programming languages for some years now. One of his recent creations is "Unity", which adds new features to The Game Creators flagship product "Dark Basic Professional". You can view their website at http://www.thegamecreators.com

Another of David's products was launched in February 2005. "Clear skies" is an online game in which players set up and manage their own airline in competition with other players worldwide. Currently he is developing a website and online shop for a greetings card business.

Victory in the Boodles ISFA Cup semi-final

First half goals from Jack Minshaw and Robert Wildman saw the 1st XI through to the cup final. The final will be played on Monday 20 March at the Walkers Stadium, Leicester. Kick off is at 7pm. Our opponents will be last year's winners of the competition Millfield School who defeated Hampton School 3-0 in the other semi-final.

Cheshire U19 Indoor Hockey Champions
The girls' first team defeated Upton Hall 2-1 in the final to win the tournament.

Week beginning Monday 23 January

Prizegiving
Judge Elgan Edwards, Honorary Recorder of the City of Chester, presented prizes to more than an hundred top achievers at the school's annual prizegiving. The pupils had all achieved outstanding success in the classroom, on the sports field, in the performing arts or in dedicated service to the school and local community.

The school's top academic prize, the Westminster Medal, was won by Owain Johnstone, Head of School 2004/5, who will be reading English and modern languages at St Anne's College, Oxford after completing his gap year.

In the photograph, left to right: Headmaster, Tim Turvey; Emma Ross (prize for service to the school, now studying at Manchester Metropolitan University); Richard Pawson (Brotherhood Award for the greatest contribution to sixth form life and the prize for religious studies, now studying at Bristol University); Rhodri Owen (Head of School, lower sixth Latin prize who will read Law at Cambridge) and His Honour Judge Elgan Edwards.

Rugby honours
Nick Jones, who captained the 1st XV in 2002/3, has succeeded in the highly competitive world of university rugby and represented Cambridge in the Under-21 varsity match at Twickenham in December 2005.

Nick is in his second year at Girton College, reading Chemical Engineering. As well as school rugby, he also played for Chester Rugby Club and represented Cheshire at Under 15 and Under 18 levels.

Unfortunately, Nick was on the losing side this time. Oxford won the match 25-6.
