Sixth form physicists' visit to CERN
Between Wednesday and Saturday of last week, a group of 20 upper
sixth formers travelled on the annual Physics department trip to
the Eurpean Centre for Particle Physics at CERN, Geneva. The
highlight of this years trip was undoubtedly the chance to
witness the contruction, in a giant cavern 100 metres underground,
of the ATLAS detector, some 46 metres in length and weighing 7,000
tonnes. The task of this experiment when it starts running will
be to detect the presence of the Higgs Boson, a vital but as yet
undiscovered ingredient of the Standard Model of Particle
Physics.
The group also visited one of CERN's many
particle accelerators, and an experiment to make and study atoms
of antimatter, which
has been brought to public awareness recently by the novel
'Angels and Demons' by Dan Brown.
In the evenings, the group dined out in style at pizza and fondue
restaurants in Geneva. Dr. Bosworth passes on his grateful thanks
to all who travelled for making it such a worthwhile trip and for
the pleasure of their company.

Muslim visitors
The

welcoming three Muslim speakers to the school on Wednesday 30th
November 2005. Mr Abdul Jolil (left), Mr Abdun Noor (next to the
headmaster) and the Imam of the Chester Mosque addressed the school's
regular Wednesday Assembly. The title of the assembly was 'A Muslim
Perspective'.
Mr Jolil and Mr Noor spoke about the Muslim Community in Chester
and the particular problems being faced by that community, particularly
since 7th July bombings. The Imam spoke about the basic beliefs
of Islam and described the difference between Sunni and Shi'ah
Muslims. All three speakers stressed the peaceful nature of Islam
and emphasised their rejection of violence. The pupils listened
attentively and respectfully and were left with much to think about.
Following the assembly, the three visitors joined in two lessons.
The first was a Fourth Year GCSE Religious Studies class, during
which pupils had the opportunity to ask questions about the 5 Pillars
of Islam. The second lesson was a Remove Thinking Skills Class,
during which the visitors stimulated a thoughtful discussion about
life after death.
The visit provided and excellent opportunity for pupils to hear
and think about a different religious perspective.
