Under-11A 2007 cricket season
Could it be magic? A review of the U11'A' Cricket season 2007
This is the story of a team which set records during my time as coach at King's. A team which produced an unbeaten season with another cup win. Imagine it is Summer 2006 and the U10 cricket team have shown their potential to all. As their next coach I smile to myself. Four of the team have already played a whole season in the U11s and won the AJIS Cup. Will they be motivated? Do they want to improve? Can I inspire them to greater things? During this season the answer to all my questions has been YES!
Let us start with the records. The most totals of over 150 in a season. The most partnerships of 100 and over. The most partnerships of 50 and over. The most runs by an individual (Guy Dunbavand). The highest batting average by an individual (Guy Dunbavand). The most individual scores of over 50 in a season (6). The highest score by an individual (75 –Guy Dunbavand). The most amount of players scoring 50 or more (Guy Dunbavand, Craig Evans & Fraser Murdoch). The most sixes. The lowest bowling average by any individual (Fraser Murdoch). The records tell one side of the story but this was a team not a statistician's dream ticket! Perhaps the real heroes of this side were the boys who didn't always get a bat or didn't always bowl 4 overs but gave their all in the pursuit of victory and more importantly, the level of team performance.
The team of 2007 will live long in my memory for the way they believed in themselves, applied themselves and went after what they truly wanted- to be unbeaten and retain the AJIS Cup. We lost three fixtures to the weather but managed to play most of our old rivals either in the cup or in friendlies. The games which truly standout are the fixtures against The Grange in which Olly Church bowled very well to get us out of real trouble and send us to the next round of the cup and the AJIS semi-final which was a superb team effort against a strong Bury GS.
The final itself was played at home against a competitive Stockport GS. It proved to be a very one sided affair after an excellent bowling performance by King's. We chased the modest total of 61 with the loss of only 2 wickets. The winning runs were fittingly struck by Fraser Murdoch who, along with our keeper Phil Salt, leaves King's at the end of the year. My congratulations to the team on achieving their unbeaten status and heartfelt thanks to their parents for their unstinting support throughout the season.
The team was: Guy Dunbavand(C),Phil Salt, Craig Evans, Fraser Murdoch, James Hattersley, Henry Makings, Matt Curtis, Oliver Church, Peter Boothroyd, Matt McClelland, Tom Armatage and Bradley Kilner.
Further details of each game can be found in the sport section of the JS link on the King's school website.
