ENGLISH
English is recognised as being of paramount
importance within the curriculum and the main objective of the
English curriculum is
to enable pupils to develop to the full their ability to use
and understand language. In studying English, our pupils develop
skills in reading, writing, speaking and listening. We aim to provide
a breadth and depth of
experience with a high quality of content.
We use the ‘Focus
on Literacy’ scheme as our core set
text throughout J1, J2 and J3 with J4 having a little more freedom
to explore language through the study of Shakespeare and a variety
of texts.
Reading
Throughout
KS2 reading is carefully monitored by the school and by the parents.
The children are expected to read for a
minimum of 15 minutes a day in addition to their set homework.
At school
the pupils can choose books from their class library and the
school library.
Spelling
Spelling
is taught as part of the English curriculum. All pupils are
expected to learn spellings and are tested at regular
intervals. The children are taught to ‘look, say,
cover, write, check’ as
a method of learning.
Drama
The pupils participate in Drama
as one of their activity sessions which amount to approximately
eight one-hour sessions
per year.
Two drama productions are presented each year. A play
is performed by the Year 4/J2 pupils in the Lent term
and
Year 6/J4 pupils
present their production in the Summer term.

Each class has eight periods of Maths
during the week. The Heinemann Maths scheme is the core
element throughout
the Junior School. There are also regular Mental and
Problem solving activities. The children are mainly taught
as a class, but there is also group work and individual
teaching. Each child is issued with an individual whiteboard
which can be used for mental tests or to consolidate
class teaching.
There are internal exams in November
and May.
A Maths puzzle is displayed weekly.
Anyone may enter and a house point is awarded after three
correct answers.
All pupils in J3 and J4 enter the
Primary Maths Challenge
which is a national competition. In the 2003-4
year, we had four pupils who reached the final – an
excellent achievement.

Science in the Junior School is taught
in half-termly or termly topics and follows the content
of the National
Curriculum and QCA recommendations.
From J1, pupils are
encouraged to develop fair testing techniques in a variety
of practical tests and investigations. By J4, we aim
to give children the skills to devise their own experiments,
record results in a logical manner and
come up with informed conclusions about their findings.
Children
will work individually, as part of a small group or
as part of a larger group on experiments and investigate
challenges.

The use of ICT
is both stimulating and motivating and at the same time
enhancing and extending the learning
process.
The lessons encourage new ways of thought, problem
solving and pupil autonomy. They inspire innovation and
creativity
and if the children are able to exploit its full potential
they will have the confidence to use ICT throughout
their lives.

In keeping with the fact that the
King’s Junior School
is a Church of England school, the predominant faith in
the Junior School is Christianity. We celebrate this with
a daily assembly, which all staff and pupils attend. It
is important to note, however, that children of all faiths
are positively welcomed into the school. The school maintains
strong links with Chester Cathedral and at the end of each
term we take part in a whole school service at the Cathedral.
Religious
Education promotes pupils’ spiritual, moral,
social and cultural development. By studying Christianity
in depth and also studying other religions such as Buddhism,
Hinduism, Judaism and Islam the children are able to
develop their knowledge and understanding of faiths,
practices
and values of other major religions. The children learn
to develop positive attitudes towards other people, respecting
their right to hold beliefs different to their own.
Topics
include:
J1 - Christianity – Old Testament, New Testament
and Christian customs and traditions / Buddhism
J2 - Christianity – Old Testament, New Testament
and Christian customs and traditions / Hinduism
J3 - Christianity – Bible Explorer / Judaism

customs / Islam
A variety of teaching methods are
used, including debates,
discussions, drama, role play, games, writing play
scripts and designing posters. A great many visual
aids are used,
including religious artefacts, posters and videos.
The children are also encouraged to do research on
the Internet.
Visits to local places of worship are also considered
to be an important aspect of the R.S. Curriculum.

P.E. and Games in the Junior School
are planned to provide a balance of activities. The lessons
aim to be as enjoyable
an experience as possible to hopefully encourage children
to continue with some form of physical activity in later
life thus ensuring a healthier lifestyle in their adult
life.
All pupils are taught P.E. lessons
in form groups and games lessons in year groups. They
will have two P.E.
lessons
and two games lessons per week.
During the course of the
year, all children represent their house in House competitions
and the year ends with
upper
school and lower school sports days.
There are school
teams in football, netball, pop-lacrosse, cricket,
rounders swimming, tennis, cross-country and
athletics. The children take part in numerous matches
throughout the
year against schools all over the North-West. The
Under 11 football team also travel to Cambridge for an
annual

MUSIC
Music plays a large role in the life
of the school at Junior King's. A very large number of
boys and girls are involved
from the very first day they arrive. There is a very popular
choir with lunchtime rehearsals once a week. Pupils just
turn up.... auditions are not
necessary. The choir sings at a number of special occasions
during the school year. They are evident at the Prize
Giving evening in November and a small number only at
Open Morning
also in November. The full choir always sings at concerts
in school and in Chester Cathedral for the end of term
services.
The school orchestra is made up
of pupils who have had lessons on their orchestral instrument
for at
least two
terms. We have a full range of orchestral instruments
of varying standards. Music is specially written for
the pupils,
so all standards are catered for. We play all kinds
of music; TV themes, film music and classical music.
All
pupils learn to play the descant recorder in year 1
as part of their music lessons. Some pupils are proficient
enough to join the orchestra after a few terms.
Pupils
bring their musical instrument to school on a regular
basis to accompany the hymn in morning
assemblies. Classes
of pupils too are able to accompany the hymn on
a percussion instrument from a large selection we have
in school.
This has to be arranged on a rota because of the
enthusiasm of the pupils.
Private Music Lessons
Pupils can at any time choose to learn a musical
instrument. We are very fortunate to be able
to offer lessons on
a huge number of instruments from visiting
peripatetic teachers:
Violin Flute Cornet Percussion
Viola Oboe Trumpet Keyboard
Cello Clarinet Trombone Piano
Bassoon Tenor Horn
Saxophone Euphonium
Singing lessons are also available.
The 35-minute lessons
take place in a purpose built music school close to the
junior school
buildings.
Before-school
and after-school lessons do take place,
but, in the main, lessons are given on a rota basis during the
school day.
Trinity College of Music examinations
can be taken in December or May.

with visual, tactile and sensory experiences enabling them
to observe and develop aesthetic awareness. It offers children
the opportunity to learn about other designers, artists and crafts
people and to gain an understanding and appreciation
of methods and motives of people from contemporary life, other
cultures and different times.
Art and Design contributes to broader
aspects of education such as children’s spiritual, social
and cultural development.

Technology in the Junior School takes the
form of termly or half-termly projects.
These begin in the first
year as 2-dimensional card and paper
pieces that are aimed at developing the children’s drawing
and cutting skills, building up to more complex 3-dimensional
projects that
require more sophisticated planning and construction. Projects
are a mixture of both the open-ended problem-solving type
and the use of forces in a 3-D context.
Children are encouraged to use the internet
as research for both information and source images. They
are shown how to use a wide variety of tools and materials
in a safe manner.
