Pastoral care

a teacher with a pupilAll students are seen as individuals who are valued members of the school community. We aim to understand the needs of students and care for their well being and progress. Tutors get to know each student very well and are the first point of contact for parents; however, students are encouraged to be open with all members of staff.  We also encourage students to consider the welfare of others as much as their own needs both within the school and outside.

The pastoral management is led by the Deputy Head (Pastoral) and each year group is directed by a Head of Year.

In Removes, each of the teaching groups are split into two tutor groups of  approximately 11-14 students to ensure that they are closely supported during their first year in the senior school. Each Remove student is also allocated a 6th Form mentor who has weekly contact with the student to provide additional encouragement.

In Shells to Fifth year, tutor groups are typically 21-22.  The tutor groups are distinct from teaching groups, although Lifeskills is delivered by the tutor during tutor periods and one additional timetabled period per week.  Each year group also has regular assemblies/meetings led by the Head of Year. Remove and Shell Tutor groups also have designated prefects to monitor their welfare prior to morning registration.

We encourage parents to be involved in monitoring the progress of their sons and daughters through their personal organisers and actively encourage communication with teachers.  Students receive grades via an on-line system every half-term and Parents' evenings are held annually, with an additional meeting for Removes.  Further meetings are arranged to discuss significant decisions, for example GCSE and AS choices. Formal written reports are also produced at least once per year.

school nurse and medical doomMedical

Ill or injured pupils are referred to our school nurse, Sister Catherall and medical room assistant Mrs Hornby. They will be cared for either at school or hospital until a parent/guardian arrives. If a pupil remains in school and parents can not be contacted by phone, a letter will be issued detailing the nature of the apparent illness/injury and any treatment given. Consent for "over the counter medications" is routinely obtained pre admission to school by completing the necessary form.

If you wish to discuss management of your child's health the school nurse can be contacted on 01244 689568.
