The Association, founded in 1866, is one of the longest established and most successful in the country.

The objects of the Association are:

  • to promote good fellowship among, and the interests of, former students
  • to strengthen the ties between the past and present
  • to further the general interests of the school in every possible way.

A Year Book and Event Card is published annually and regular Newsletters keep members in this country and abroad informed. Members have access to the online membership database through which they can keep in contact with their friends and acquaintances.

On the second Saturday of January each year the Association's spectacular Annual Dinner is held in the Main Hall. A Champagne Reception kicks off the evening in style for the 200 or so Old King's Scholars attending. This is a prestigious 5-course wholly candle lit formal event during which the latest Old King's Scholars' Exhibitioner is presented with the award by the Right Worshipful the Lord Mayor of Chester.

A wide variety of other social events take place throughout the year. The President's Evening Summer Dinner and Champagne Reception is held in late June. More informal social events include Crown Green and Ten Pin Bowling evenings, a Golf Tournament, and a Snooker Challenge Match. Sports events include Rowing, Cricket and Hockey versus the school.

Each year the Association gives significant assistance to the school including:

  • donations towards projects significant to the School as a whole
  • funding the Baty Travel Award for a meritorious gap year project every year
  • providing financial support for the Old King's Scholars' Exhibition which is given to the most outstanding student going up to university each year
  • recognising individual achievements on the sports field with tankards awarded at school prize giving.

Every year CAOKS puts together an extensive programme of events, social gatherings and fundraisers.

143rd Annual Dinner - January 2009

The 143rd Annual Dinner of The Chester Association of Old King's Scholars (CAOKS) was held this year at the Grosvenor Hotel in Chester. It was a wonderful occasion where 165 OKS, former and current teachers and Headmasters, friends and the current head of school prefect team enjoyed some good food and company. Old King's Scholars old and new attended, the youngest being leavers in 2008 and the oldest left the school in 1935.

143rd CAOKS Annual Dinner

The school's Senior Librarian and Archivist, Helen Holyoak, provided a fabulous slideshow of old photographs. Young faces from many years ago were shown throughout the dinner and generated much interest and amusement.

The guest of Honour was Tom James, OKS, Olympic Gold medallist and recently announced MBE. The toast to the School was made by Rowan Pritchard-Jones MD, MRCS, who spoke eloquently about his life after King's as a plastic surgeon and his grateful thanks for the opportunities afforded him by an education at King's.

Mark Cornelius, who now lives and works in London as an advertising account manager, offered the toast to the Association and he spoke amusingly about his time at school. The President responded and thanked everyone for their contribution in making the evening a success. The food was superb, the speeches were good and setting was a sumptuous one but once formalities over it was the chance to catch up with old friends that really made the evening special.
