Mr Malone. Headmaster of the Junior SchoolLatest news from the headmaster

Week beginning Monday 8 March 2010

Our Informal Concert, ‘A Celebration of Pupils’ Performance in Speech, Music and Drama’, takes place in The Consterdine Hall during the morning of Wednesday 10th March.  Along with the orchestra, choir and some talented soloists, for whom the event marks their first public performance, there will be representation from various other aspects of the performing arts.  Please feel free to come in to this, even if you can only stay a short while – or while your child performs.  The concert will commence at 10.00 am, pause for an interval at about 10.45 am and continue until approximately 12 noon.  The orchestra will open proceedings and the choir will start the post-interval session at approximately 11.00 am.  I would politely request that parents do not take their seats in the Consterdine Hall until after 9.45 am to facilitate our preparations.

On Thursday evening, over forty pupils will be attending a performance of the Rambert Dance Company at Theatr Clwyd.  It promises to be a spectacular show.  Earlier in the day, J1 pupils will be visiting St Mary’s Parish Church in Handbridge.

On Sunday (14th March) our mixed gender basketball team play in the regional final of the ‘Hoops for Health’ competition held at Northgate Arena.  We appear in the final for the second consecutive year and hope to make up for last year’s disappointment of losing to a team we had beaten comfortably in a preliminary round.  Come on, boys and girls – WE CAN DO IT!  (Apologies to mums that the event falls on Mothering Sunday – please make sure you are served breakfast in bed by your son or daughter as a means of compensation!)

The children very much enjoyed their recent visit to the Schools’ Concert at the Liverpool Philharmonic Hall.  The children were appreciative of the pieces played whilst displaying behaviour of the highest standard.  Well done.

The Bible Explorer course for J4s has now ended.  Once again, it was well received by pupils.

We all had much fun on World Book Day and raised in excess of £200 for Book Aid International.  The costumes get better every year.  Well done and thank you for a great effort!

The Perse School soccer team visited us last week and experienced a most enjoyable tour.  My grateful thanks to all host families for your support during the visit.

The Senior School production of Les Misérables has quite rightly received rave reviews.  I had the privilege of being present for one of the performances.  It was quite outstanding.  I was most pleased to see so many former Junior School pupils involved, either on stage, as members of the orchestra or as members of the crew.  I would like to think that we initiate interest in music and the performing arts which allows pupils’ natural talent to shine through.

Please may I remind parents that, in order to make use of the After-School Care facility, pupils must be registered with the Care Scheme.

Good Work:

  • William Roberts for his consistently high attainment levels in English.

Sketchbook of the Week:

Erin Morgan – J2T for her fantastic design for a sculpture inspired by the work of the artist, Julie Arkell.

Congratulations:

  • Llewelyn Bevan has qualified for the Aegon Winter Grand Prix Masters Tennis event to be held at the National Tennis Centre in Surrey.  We wish Llewelyn every success.
  • Tom Thelwall-Jones represented Shropshire at tennis as top seed and was instrumental in the county’s success against Leicestershire and Gloucestershire.
  • Lexie Samuel, who participated in the mini hockey championships at the county festival.

Forthcoming Events:

On Wednesday 24th March at 7.00 p.m in the Senior School Hall, the second year are presenting their production of ‘The Wizard of Oz’.  The second-year play is now an established tradition and, like their predecessors, the pupils have worked hard to prepare their production and I do hope a very large number of you will be able to come and support the event.  It would be most rewarding for all concerned to see a large number of parents present, not only those directly associated with J2.  As with all our concerts and plays there is no charge for seats and you simply have to come along on that evening.  There will be a collection for our charities.

Pupils in J2 will be free to leave at 1.00 p.m on this day in order to rest during the afternoon prior to their performance.  Would J2 parents kindly inform us whether or not they intend to collect their sons/daughters early by completing and returning the reply slip on the letter sent home recently.  Thank you. If it is not possible to make arrangements to collect your son/daughter at the time stated, we will supervise them in school until normal finish time.

The End of Term Service in the cathedral begins at 10.30 a.m. on Friday 26th March.  The Junior School choir will sing an item on this occasion. Choir members should assemble at the site of the old choir school playground in Abbey Square at 9.20 am.  All other pupils should assemble by 10 am.    At the conclusion of the service (11.30 am) pupils will return to the meeting point, assemble in form groups and be released by staff upon collection from this location by their parents.

Week beginning Monday 1 March 2010

Three key events take place this week:

On Wednesday, the whole of the Junior School will attend the Schools’ Concert at the Liverpool Philharmonic Hall.  We shall depart from school just after 9 am, returning to school a little after 1 pm, when a packed lunch will be provided for all pupils.

This year’s concert will focus on innovation and will feature specially chosen pieces of music to link in with key aspects of the curriculum, in particular music, science and technology.

On Thursday, we celebrate World Book Day.  This is a non-uniform day.  Pupils (and staff!) should come to school dressed as a character from a book.  We suggest that a contribution of at least £1 is donated to charity during the morning registration period.

Friday sees The Perse School, Cambridge, visit us for their annual soccer tour.  A busy programme is planned culminating in the King’s v Perse soccer match on Sunday, played for the ‘Tour Trophy’.  My grateful thanks to those parents who have so kindly agreed to act as hosts for the weekend.

It is good that we are able to welcome Mrs Dickson back to school.  Grateful thanks to Mrs Dennis for providing teaching cover.  I know that Mrs Dennis thoroughly enjoyed her second ‘stint’ with us this year.

The pupils very much enjoyed the visits made to school last week by Explore Learning, who set up writing workshops.  Having visited some of the sessions, I can vouch for how much the pupils benefited from the experience. Similarly, J1 pupils were treated to the delights of an ‘Ancient Greek’ day!

At the end of one particularly busy day last week, before setting off for home to see my family, I took time to examine the recent entrants in the ‘Footprints’ box for the personal intentions of the pupils.  It was a moving and humbling experience.  When visiting school on any occasion, do feel free to look at the messages left by pupils.  They are noted in the ‘Footprints’ book in the Junior School Library.

Local cleric and school governor, Revd Ian Thomas, visited us last week and led an Assembly.

Representatives of the pupils’ ‘School Council’ have been elected and officers appointed.  Pupils are responding most positively to this recently-introduced initiative.  A group of J4 pupils have established a fortnightly newsletter, entitled Bi-Kingly.

 Congratulations:

  • J3 pupils, Patrick Timpson, is to appear in the professional stage production of ‘Joseph and the Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat’.
  • J2 pupils, Charlie Clarke and Thomas Bailes, join the cast of ‘Whistle Down the Wind’.
  • The J2A cake sale raised £68.47 for the charity ‘Cash for Kids’, overseen by Radio City, whose representative addressed pupils.
  • Fleur Garside for her success in the Cheshire Hunt South Pony Club Championships.

Good Work:

  • William Roberts (1G) for achieving consistently high scores in his mathematics work.
  • Alex Freeman (1R) for his beautifully drawn and coloured Greek vase.
  • Ben Gale (2D) for his project on Iceland.

Sketchbook of the Week:

Aylish Maclean  (1R) who has worked really hard to complete a beautiful colour wheel.

Cheshire Jets ‘Hoops for Health’ regional basketball competition:

The mixed gender J3 and J4 basketball team won the regional section of this event.  We now meet the winners of the NE Wales section in the regional final to be played before and during half-time of a Cheshire Jets home fixture at Northgate Arena.

Team members:

Fraser Smellie Harry Armatage
Joe Polding Tom Meadows
Jonathan Nixon Matthew Thompson
Najma Elsayed Polly Chappell
Annie Powell Chloe Cowan
Anna Wallace

Very well done to everyone involved!

AJIS Girls’ Hockey:

Although the team did not progress through to the finals, they did finish second in their groups, being defeated in only one game.

Week beginning Monday 22 February 2010

I hope that the pupils enjoyed a relaxing week during the half-term break and that they have returned to school feeling refreshed and ready to tackle the remainder of the term with renewed vigour.

Some of the highlights of the next few weeks include the J2 Play, the Informal Concert and a whole-school visit to the Royal Philharmonic Hall in Liverpool.

A wonderful sum of £650 was raised via our ‘Silly Socks and Ties Day’ for the Haiti Earthquake Appeal.  A great effort.  Well done and thank you to all, particularly William Ashton who conceived the idea.

On Thursday 4th March, we celebrate World Book Day.  This is a non-uniform day and pupils are encouraged to come to school in a costume depicting their favourite book character and donate £1 to charity.

May I please remind you and your children that hand-held game devices are no longer permitted in school.

If you have not already notified us of your e-mail address, please do so.  Similarly do notify us if you change e-mail address at any point throughout the year.

Over 94,000 pupils in 2,577 schools took part in the UK Primary Mathematics Challenge this year.  Less than 5% of the entrants achieved 21 or more out of 25 in Round One.  Congratulations to Jack Hodgkinson, Wilf Le Brocq and Joe Gillett who reached the National Final.  The Final result will be displayed on The Mathematical Association website on Saturday 13th March, 2010.

The ‘Hoops for Health’ basketball scheme, organised by the Cheshire Jets, has been expanded and is now part of a national programme.  It has been welcomed by over 120 schools in the local area this season.  Community coaches and basketball players continually strive to convey positive health messages and the importance of exercise and eating in a healthy fashion.

The King’s Junior School pupils enjoyed the Roadshow sessions conducted in the classrooms and they support the teaching in other areas of the curriculum, in particular Science and Personal and Social Education.  Over eighty J3 and J4 pupils have been part of the coaching events and the students enthusiastically created a display in the school corridors.  The display includes a five-foot tall image of Jerrah Young and a collage of the Cheshire Jets logo.  Mr Hollingworth captured the enthusiasm and skill of the pupils on camera and Mr O’Neill has a difficult task to select a team of only ten players to represent the school in the regional competition on Thursday 25th February.

The pupils look forward to working with our local professional basketball stars in the future and will be attending some of the BBL matches at the Northgate Arena.

RLPS Schools’ Concert: ‘Back to the Future’

It has been arranged for the whole of the Junior School to go to the annual Schools’ Concert at the Liverpool Philharmonic Hall on Wednesday 3rd March.

This year the concert will focus on innovation, as 2010 has been designated Liverpool’s Year of Innovation.  This will be using specially chosen pieces of music to link in with key aspects of the curriculum and encounter several examples of innovation in action in music, science and technology.  Also, to celebrate the links between Liverpool and China through World Expo 2010 Shanghai, the orchestra will be playing some traditional Chinese music.

The highly entertaining and acclaimed percussionist, Alasdair Malloy, will lead the audience through the dazzling and varied repertoire of music.  The children can be assured of an exciting, educational and music-filled experience.

Good Work:

  • Ailsa Black, Miranda Thompson and Alchemy Lucas for their work on ‘My Fabulous Creature’;
  • Charlotte Tiller for much improved work in Mathematics;
  • Megan Jones for her ice cream advert;
  • Aylish Maclean and Louis Jackson for their questionnaires;

Week beginning Monday 8 February 2010

Last week we celebrated National Story Week with numerous staff members holding story-telling sessions during the lunchbreak.  The children really enjoyed themselves, as did the staff.  The fun continues this week with a ‘story trail’ timetable having been drawn up for each class.

As planned we were invaded by The Vikings last Thursday.  J2 pupils gained much from the varied activities and role play.  The Tudors are scheduled to visit J3 this week!

You will be aware that the Junior School is holding a ‘Silly Ties and Silly Socks Day’ on Wednesday 10th February.  Pupils are asked to wear the usual school uniform but with a replacement tie and a pair of socks!  It is in aid of the Haiti Earthquake Appeal.  Raising £10 could provide a family with a basic water kit.  We are suggesting a donation of at least £1 per pupil, if your child would like to take part.  Supporting this event will be much appreciated and will make a big difference to families in Haiti.  Thank you in advance.

J3M are to hold a special Assembly on this day.  Particular thanks to William Ashton who conceived the fundraising idea, which will also see staff joining in the fun.

Please be advised that DSIs and PSPs are no longer permitted in school.

Week beginning Monday 1 February 2010

This week sees members of J3 taking their internal examinations.  I hope that all have prepared well and that all give of their best.

Our CCC Road Safety representatives, Sarah Stearne and James Hughes, are to give an update to fellow pupils during Assembly on Monday.

Class representatives for the School Council have been nominated and elections for chairperson and secretary take place on Monday, also.

Lots of sports fixtures this week, including an U8 game versus The Grange on Tuesday, replacing U10B.  The long-awaited AJIS Cup quarter-final takes place on Saturday, away at Stockport. …. never the easiest venue at which to record a victory!

The Vikings are due to visit this week, weather permitting.  Their previous expedition to Chester had to be aborted due to snow!

The ‘Hoops for Health’ basketball scheme, run in conjunction with Cheshire Jets, continues to be very well received.

The National Finals of the Primary Maths Challenge take place this week.  We wish Wilf Le Brocq, Jack Hodgkinson and Joe Gillett every success.

The Junior School is holding a ‘Silly Ties and Silly Socks Day’ on Wednesday 10th February.  Pupils are asked to wear the usual school uniform, but with a replacement tie and a pair of socks!

Week beginning Monday 25 January 2010

It was good to welcome Revd. Ian Thomas into school last week to lead an Assembly.  The children enjoyed the talk and Revd. Thomas had a ‘smashing’ time, too, as part of his address included breaking a plate into several pieces using a hammer!

Another visitor last week was Mr Mark Griffiths, a headteacher from a local state school.  I know that he very much enjoyed his afternoon with us.

I know that J1D parents welcomed the opportunity to meet Mrs Jo Dennis, who is covering the current absence of Mrs Karen Dickson.

Unfortunately, the Vikings had to abort their planned visit to Chester due to inclement weather in mid-Wales but we hope to be able to re-arrange their workshop with the pupils.

Four members of the Cheshire Jets team, together with their first team coach, entertained J3 pupils as part of the ‘Hoops for Health’ scheme.  The scheme has been expanded and is part of a national programme.  It has been welcomed by over 120 schools in the local area this season.  Community coaches and basketball players will strive to convey positive health messages and the importance of exercise and eating in a sensible fashion.  The Roadshow sessions will be conducted in classrooms and will support the teaching in other areas of the curriculum, in particular Science and Personal and Social Education.  Basketball coaching sessions will take place in the Senior School Sports Hall at the stated times and a squad will be selected to represent the school at the regional final.  The sessions after school are not compulsory, however it is hoped that a number of pupils will attend.  For all of the activities, the J3 pupils will be organised in small groups.  Pupils will require white PE kit for all sessions. Hopefully all members of J3 will enjoy and benefit from this experience.

The sessions on 3rd and 10th February are also open to J4 members.  However, places are restricted and the deadline for applications has already passed.

Our swimmers met very strong opponents in the form of Merchant Taylors’ Boys’ School and suffered a rare defeat.  The hosts boasted a number of county team members.  However, most of the events were extremely closely contested.  It was pleasing to see our J1s taking part and having such good fun.  J3 pupil, Isobel Wild, performed with particular poise and skill.

U8 and U9 swimmers are in action on Monday evening at Queen’s.  J1 and J4 House swimming galas are postponed.  The AJIS girls’ swimming event at Runnymede takes place on Friday.

Football fixtures return, too, with the U10s playing Manchester Grammar School (A) on Tuesday at 2 pm and the U11s travelling to Lady Barn House on Friday at 1.45 pm.

School Council meets for the first time this term on Thursday.  Bible Explorer for J4s commences on Wednesday.

I am sure you are aware that, as part of our Assembly on Mondays, we say ‘Intentions’ for pupils, staff or pupils, who have requested that we share a moment or two of reflection to consider those in need or to celebrate others’ joy.  Requests may be placed in the ‘Footprints’ box in the Library.  Please do feel free to support this initiative or to examine the list of intentions read thus far this year and which is displayed adjacent to the Junior School Office.

Congratulations:

  • J3O, who raised £88.12 via their cake sale.  Monies raised are to be forwarded to ‘Cash 4 Kids’, a charity organised by Radio City.
  • Harry Caputo and Joseph Webb who both secured first places in the Ramada swimming gala.
  • Daniel Verity on being selected to represent East Cheshire (U13s) at Hockey.

Good Work:

  • Jasmine Denton, for ‘How to Turn Your Teacher into a Toad’.
  • Lucas Leon, for a vastly improved standard of handwriting.
  • Jessica Lee, Louis McDonald, Megan Gareh, Sophie Garnell, Miles Meredith, Matthew Drew, Isobel Wild, Annie Powell and Bethan Pode for the construction of highly imaginative clocks.

Week beginning Monday 18 January 2010

I am grateful to you for your understanding at the beginning of this term as we cope with the adverse weather conditions.  We have tried very hard to keep school open.  May thanks to you and, indeed, to the staff for the efforts made in getting to and from school, at times in difficult conditions.

A word of praise for the pupils, too.  Despite not having been able to venture outside at breaktimes to ‘let off some steam’, their behaviour has been exemplary.  They have shown great ‘togetherness’ and maturity.  Very well done to them and thank you!

Unfortunately, the U11 soccer matches at St Ambrose had to be called off last week due to the poor weather.  This was a pity as the match in Hale is traditionally one of our most difficult assignments.  Girls’ hockey at Merchant Taylors’ also fell foul of the weather as did our home game versus Queen’s.

J3 pupils are to take part in the Cheshire Jets Basketball team’s ‘Hoops for Health’ scheme in the near future.  Roadshow and basketball coaching sessions will take place on the following dates:

  • 21st January, 1.15 pm to 3.30 pm
  • 27th January, 1.15 pm to 4.45 pm
  • 3rd February, 3.30 pm to 4.45 pm
  • 10th February, 3.30 pm to 4.45 pm
  • 25th February, 3.30 pm – Regional Competition

We hope that all J3 pupils will enjoy the experience and participate enthusiastically.  A squad of players (including two girls) will be selected for the Cheshire Primary Schools’ event.  Mr O’Neil has written to parents with further information.  King’s progressed through to the regional final last year and played before and during the interval of a Cheshire Jets fixture.

The Vikings are set to invade us on Wednesday, as the J2 yeargroup becomes involved in a day-long role-play exercise.  It promises to be much fun!

Revd Ian Thomas, school governor, will visit this week to lead an Assembly.

It was good to see King’s choristers live on BBC TV on Christmas Day as the service came from Chester Cathedral.  The King’s School banners also featured prominently.  (Now the children can claim that their work has been featured on national television!).

We have joined the Fones 4 Schools recycling scheme.  Any unwanted mobile phones should be brought into school and we will arrange for them to be collected.

May I remind parents that, due to the Entrance Examinations taking place in both Junior (7+) and Senior Schools (11+), school will be closed on Friday 22nd January.  Naturally we hope that all J4 pupils will give of their best on this day … we shall be thinking of them.
