Trevor Eaton’s Visit to King’s

Monday 7th November marked an exciting day for English students at King’s as they were visited by the renowned Oxford graduate Mr Trevor Eaton, who has made himself famous in the literary world for his dramatic performances of The Canterbury Tales which he recites in fluent Middle English -thus gaining him the title of ‘The Chaucer Man’.

Mr Eaton started his talk by discussing the linguistics of the script – and its relevance in reference to diachronic and synchronic texts. He also gave informative tips to sixth formers on how to best answer exam questions and phrase arguments most effectively. He then went on to passionately act out ‘The Pardoner’s Tale’ for his captivated audience and really got into character with his bellowing voice and dramatic pacing around the stage. This was the first time sixth formers had heard Middle English being spoken and we found it interesting how the syntax, vocabulary and pronunciation differ from modern day English. The Shells joined us for the last session and were highly entertained by his enthusiasm, and recitations of a passage of Old English as well as Middle English..

To conclude the afternoon, we had a question and answer feedback session. On behalf of King’s, we’d like to thank Mr Eaton for taking the time to visit us all the way from Kent.
