Olympic Torchbearers
Two teachers from The King's School have got through to the final stages for selection to carry the Olympic Torch. PE Teacher Mr Chris Morris was nominated through Kidney Research and King's Junior School teacher Mr David O'Neil has been nominated by MENCAP for raising money in order to fund projects for people with learning and physical disabilities. All of the events that David has held and participated in over the past few years and the money raised have been in memory of his sister who died 29 years ago. In addition to this, Mr David O'Neil is also currently raising money for Breast Cancer Awareness and Diabetes UK.
The London 2012 Organising Committee have created a shortlist of 28,000 potential Torchbearers from all nominations that came through the London 2012 'Moment to shine' campaign. Those who accept their nomination before 16th September 2011 are to be put forward to one of twelve judging panels around the UK. The judges will then anonymously select the 2,012 most inspiring people to be one of the 8,000 Torchbearers needed in total for the Olympic Torch Relay. Each of the nominees will have around a one in 14 chance of being selected to be a Torchbearer. Those who are successful nominees will be contacted with a conditional offer in December 2011, with Torchbearer places confirmed in February 2012. |
