Match ReportsU12 A XI won against Upton U13s home May 16, 2012This mixed 'a' and 'b' team side played some good cricket on the way to a victory which was a little more comfortable than the scoreline suggests. King's lost the toss and were put into bat. Thompson, captain for the day, and Clark then made a steady start, getting a feel for the opposition and the windy conditions. During this spell neither player looked troubled, but the run rate was a little lower than one would have liked, a combination of difficulty timing the ball and good field placement being the main causes of this. Of the two Sam Thompson 'got going' the quicker and started to push the ball around nicely and it was a blow when he misjudged an angled delivery and was bowled around the legs for 12. Robbie was then joined by the powerful Matt Drew and they then had a good few overs, finding the gaps and taking a few calculated risks. After Robbie's dismissal and Matt's run out Patel, Jackson and Meredith all added to the score, with Ben Smith unlucky to receive perhaps the best delivery of the match in his first innings for the school. The innings finished on 85 a score which, given the batting line-up, King's would have hoped to have bettered. Upton would therefore have gone into the innings with hopes of achieving the target. Given the need to allow everyone to contribute to the game Sam Thompson was set a difficult task as captain. However, he set a good field and managed the bowling well. Rory Monk was his usual effective self and showed great maturity in adjusting his line after a couple of early wides. Scot Hodgson also bowled well, though the over-by over score for Upton matched King's earlier innings. Rory got the first wicket, bowling the dangerous looking Monroe, then Arsh Adapala came on and removed the other opener courtesy of a fine catch by Scot Hodgson. These two dismissals put the breaks on Upton's progress and thereafter they were always behind the required run rate, especially after Will Richard's fine wicket maiden. King's had a slight wobble towards the end when the powerful (and enormous) Green came out, but the 16 required off the final over was always going to be too much and, despite a valiant effort, Upton just came up short. Well done to the King's players - there were some good performances and, with further work on urgency and concentration in the field, several of these players will continue to challenge for full 'a' team honours. back to results tables1st XI drew against XL Club home May 16, 2012A break in the appalling weather conditions of this summer meant that the annual fixture against the XL Club could take place amongst the myriad of exams being sat by students. This meant that King's fielded one of their youngest ever 1st XIs which contained only two Sixth Form students. The XL Club opted to bat first on what looked a tremendous wicket and outfield (a credit to the groundstaff given the recent weather) and the opener Turner started to take advantage of some short and wide bowling, cutting beautifully to the boundary on many occasions. After three seamers failing to make a break through and XL Club screaming to 91 for 0 off just 15 overs skipper Matt Williams decided to bring on spin from both ends. Singh started with his beautifully flighted left arm orthodox spin and Kurukkal with his right arm off spin from the other end. It was an excellent tactical move by skipper Matt Williams as they very quickly slowed the run rate with the latter taking a wicket in his third over bowling the opener Othick. Singh followed the next over by bowling Turner for 83. Both spinners continued to bowl excellently using flight and accuracy to pin the opposition batters down. As they tried to raise the scoring rate wickets began to fall and a superb one handed diving catch by Henry Makings at long on off Kurukkal was widely applauded by all watching. The final over resulted in 20 runs for the XL Club but from the prospect of scoring nearly 300 King's had pegged them back to only 226 off 54 overs when the declaration came with Singh and Kurrukal bowling 34 overs between them for 116 runs and 6 wickets. Given that they are only U14 and U15 respectively this was a superb effort on their part. For King's to succeed a strong start was needed and Makings and Dunbavand provided this brilliantly as they steadily built up the runs to ensure that wickets were in hand for the final 20 overs from 5.30pm. Dunbavand finally perished for a well made 46 and Matt Williams joined Makings to continue to go about harvesting runs. After a well deserved 50 Makings was caught for 58 and at this stage the run rate required was around 8 an over - not impossible but still a tough challenge against the experience of the XL Club. Evans and Curtis came to the wicket and started to try and hit the ball hard over the boundary as Williams continued to tickle and push the ball around to keep the scoreboard ticking before he was run out. This brought another young debutant to the crease in the form of Rimmer who looked cool, calm and collected as he went about trying to help King's to the final total. When Peel was bowled for 3 it was clear that a draw was the most likely result and King's stopped their charge for the finish line with a score of 192 for 6 off 48 overs. A most noble effort and a great credit to such a young side. The XL Club, as they always do, offered good advice and tips to the King's players and a superb day was had by all. back to results tablesU12 girls won 12-10 against Abbey Gate College home May 21, 2012U13 girls lost 8.5-20.5 against Abbey Gate College home May 21, 2012There was a lesson to be learned from Abbey Gate on the movement required to be a good fielder in Rounders. Abbey Gate fielded very coherently and worked especially well as a team. King's were slow to get started fielding and once got into the swing of things fielded well. Niamh Jones was consistent when bowling and Ella Hamilton was quick to react to the Abbey Gate batters. Rachel Huber was effective when moved to deep field, and the combination of Polly Chappell on second and Megan Jones on fourth reduced the Abbey Gate score in the second innings having conceeded 13 rounders in the first and only 7.5 in the second. Anna Plunkett, Ella Hamilton, Megan Jones, Polly Chappell, Imogen Szerdy and Rachel Huber all added to the score sheet for King's...and in glorious sunshine...finally!! back to results tablesU14 girls won 15.5-10.5 against Abbey Gate College home May 21, 2012After winning the toss captain, Marion Vickers, opted to field first. The Abbey Gate side looked good. and managed to score 6 rounders, 4 of which were full rounders. Alice Cousins was bowling first and did a brilliant job with Harriet Fisher on 2nd managing to get a couple of players out on 2nd base, When King's went into bat they had an achievable target. Harriet Fisher cracked her first ball and scored a full rounder but was stumped out on her 2nd go. Marion Vickers scored a full rounder shortly after. Holly Johnston was the star of the innings, hitting all her balls and scoring half each time. Zoe Rigby also got her name on the score sheet. The score was 6 all. In for their second innings King's started to take no prisoners. Grace Robinson caught out a backwards hit, again Harriet stumped many out on second and some great catching by Emily Cuffin-Mundy as bowler saw Abbey gate end thier innings early at 23 bats and only 1 1/2 added to their score. Into bat for a second time Abbey Gate too started to field well making King's panic slightly. Sophie Drew, Marion Vickers, Zoe Rigby and Grace Robinson all got out. However King's managed to hang on with Harriet again getting on the score sheet with 2 1/2 rounders, Alice Cousins managed two half rounders also. King's hung on for the full 30 balls. After the second it was 9 1/2 - 7 1/2 in King's favour. Final innings, King's again fielded strongly, catches were made, bases were frantically stumped and there was a lot of shreiking going on. Abbey Gate only managed to score six half rounders to bring their final total to 10.5. King's only needed 1 1/2 to win. All the girls connected well with the ball, sending it into the outfield, but Abbey Gate were fielding well. This didn't stop King's scoring though. Harriet Fisher scored another 2, Emily Cuffin Mundy 2 half's, Sophie Drew 1 full and 2 half's and Holly Johnson also snuck in an extra half. King's had convincingly sealed the win. back to results tablesU12 girls won 22-7.5 against Moreton Hall home May 16, 2012U12 girls lost 3-6 against Ellesmere away May 19, 2012U13 girls lost 2-7 against Ellesmere away May 19, 2012U13 boys drew 4.5-4.5 against Manchester GS home May 19, 2012This was an enjoyable morning, with all of the boys playing some good tennis in damp conditions. The first seeds, Gruffudd-Jones and Adam Halewood, opened up with a win against the corresponding MGS pair. Their comfortable 6-3 win augured well for the remaining matches and, as expected, they triumphed against the other two MGS pairs to record three victories. James Hughes and Oliver Jackson also opened up with a win, but struggled against the third MGS pair, who were actually the most 'in form' MGS twosome of the day. Despite the loss James and Oliver played a fantastic last rubber against MGS's first pair and managed a crucial draw. The match ended a draw after the less experienced pairing of Prossor and Moir failed to defeat any of their opponents, though their play in the latter stages showed clear signs of progress. This was a good match-up between the schools and all of the players can look forward to the return leg leter this term. back to results tablesU12 boys lost 1.5-7.5 against Manchester GS home May 19, 2012Despite the scoreline this was a most enjoyable morning. In damp and cold conditions the three King's pairs played some good tennis, with the matches much closer than the overall scoreline suggests. In the opening sets the King's pairs struggled against their corresponding seeds, with each match being lost. After this point only the first seeds from King's, Dan Coady-Ward and James Tomlinson, managed to grind out a victory. They also played well in the tie against a strong MGS second pair. Well done to Josh Burke and Joe Shanley, who played some good tennis in the latter stages of the morning. Ollie Kidd and Roberto King also played very well in the their final game, going down 6-3 in a good match. The players on show today will hopefully make use of the tennis sessions to further their development before the return leg in June. There wasn't a huge gulf between the teams and further practice will hopefully make a difference to both the consitency and shot selection of the team. back to results tablesU13 girls lost 9-16 against Queens away May 17, 2012U14 girls lost 3-5 against Moreton Hall home May 16, 2012Six pairs from Moreton Hall came to King's on what was a rare day of sunshine. Sophie Drew and Harriet Fisher started strongly against couple number 3 winning their match fairly easliy, however they had a shock against the number 2 pair losing the match after, by their own admission, poor concentration. This wasn't a good start for the final game against pair 1, however Sophie and Harriet battled through and won the final match. As couple number 2, Holly Ward and Emily Boothroyd played much more consistently and to form. They comfortably beat the third pair 5-2 in the opening match, lost to couple number 1 in a thrilling 4-6 tussel and then unlike King's pair 1, beat thier equal number comfortably 5-2. Isobel Dawson and Zoe Rigby had a tough start against pair one losing 6-1, the second match was not much better with a 6-2 loss, but again by the girls' own admission they were playing some sloppy tennis. Going up against their equal number things settled a lot. Many games went to deuce and Zoe and Isobel were unfortunate that they just missed out on the last game. back to results tablesU15 girls drew 4-4 against Moreton Hall home May 16, 2012Six pairs from Moreton Hall came to King's on what was a rare day of sunshine. Ellie Crisp and Georgina Hodson as pair one started strongly against couple number 2 followed by three. They unfortunately missed out on the last game against pair 1. Divya Avula and Ella Parry have signiicantly improved as tennis players this season. Diviya played some brilliant ground strokes and Ella was great at the net. Katie Pownall and Kate Huber had the toughest draw, playing couple number 1 first. They struggled to cope at times with the strong cross court shots but did volley well. back to results tables U15 girls won 2-0 against Abbey gate College away May 15, 2012The girls played a 2 set match against Abbey Gate. Both sereved and volleyed realy well all match. The first set was a close 6-4 victory however in the second set Anna and Ella really worked well, winning most points of excellent net play and took the set 6-0 back to results tablesU14 girls won 2-0 against Abbey gate College away May 15, 2012The girls played a 2 set match against Abbey Gate. This was a slightly mis-matched pairing as One of the Abby Gate players was outstanding, and quite keen to play every point even when it meant diving infront of her own partner. However, Sophie and Rachel coped well. mainly by holding out their racket and hoping for the best. Losing the first set 6-0 the girls were keen to win one game. They did just that in the opening game of the second set. Sadly it was to be thier last with the final score 6-1 in the second. back to results tablesU13 girls won 7-6 against Cransley away May 15, 2012U13 girls lost 2-10 against Grange away May 15, 2012The AEGON Team Tennis division 1 regional play off was played at the Grange School, Northwich. The girls played 5 hours of tennis in somewhat wintry conditions. Against Lymm all 4 players won their singles games convincingly with Polly Chappell winning 6-2, Charlotte Cross winning 6-3, Ella Hamilton winning 6-1 and Jessica Middleton playing to love. Against Cransley after the singles games the score was 2 sets each so the girls had to play their doubles matches. Polly and Ella beat their doubles opponents and Jess and Charlotte narrowly lost 4-6. This meant a tie break had to be played which Polly and Charlotte won 10-8. Against Grange in what was to be the decider match Jessica was the only King's player to win her singles game to love putting Grange ahead 6-2. In the doubles games both pairings lost meaning Grange won 10-2. The afternoon proved eventful as it was on games countback to find the eventual winning school. Game count back put King's in third place. The girls had their first experience of team tennis and should be pleased with their performances.back to results tables U15 girls scores tied 14-10 against Hartford, Birchwood home May 15, 2012After beating Hartford the team of Georgina Hodson, Ellie Crisp, Zoe Soutter and Lucy Armatage faced a strong team from Birchwood.
