BOOKS
The library has over 13,500 books on a wide variety of
subjects. These include:
- Subjects studied at school. There
are books to help with homework and any special projects being
undertaken.
- Sport and other recreational interests,
including hobbies and other activities which are pursued both
in school and out of school.
- Fiction - over 2,000 books to choose
from.
Suggestion forms are available by the computer
catalogue. Recommendations for new books are always welcome.
QUICK
REFERENCE COLLECTION
This is a collection of books to help find information
quickly. It includes the Encyclopaedia Britannica, English and foreign
language dictionaries, directories, statistical facts and figures,
gazetteers, data books and telephone directories. Maps and atlases
are shelved in separate Maps and Atlases collections. All the books
in this collection are for reference use only and cannot be removed
from the library.
MAIN
COLLECTION (Non-Fiction)
The Main Collection includes most of the non-fiction
books, along with English poetry, Shakespeare, and literature in
French, German and Spanish. The books are arranged by a system
known as the Dewey Decimal Classification. Each book is allocated
a classification number which represents the subject covered.

The lists at the ends of each book stack show which
subjects are held. The classification number is on the spine of
each book.
FICTION COLLECTION
The collection ofover 2,000 books covers a wide
range of fiction to suit everyone. The books are arranged in alphabetical
order by the author's surname. e.g. ROW for books by J.K. Rowling.
The collection includes all fiction written or
translated into English.
N.B. All works by Shakespeare are kept together in the Main Collection.
Fiction in other languages, e.g. French and German, is also located
in the Main Collection.
SPECIAL COLLECTION
We have a collection of about 200 books of historical
interest kept in a display cabinet. These include books written
by old boys of the school, such as George Ormerod (A History of
Cheshire), and the artist Randolph Caldecott. Most of these books
may not be borrowed.
There is a also a complete set of issues of The
King's School Magazine which began over 100 years ago.
