King's School operates an inclusive, democratic Prefect system that enables as many students as possible to gain access to positions of leadership and responsibility. We firmly believe that students of Sixth Form age are sufficiently mature to be able to select their own leaders and all Prefect positions are assigned on the basis of a vote made by both the student and staff body. Head Prefects, who work with teams of students and run committees for their assigned area of school life, are then invited to apply for the position of Head of School which is selected through a series of tasks including hustings, a letter of application, a further student and staff vote and an interview with the Headmaster and Head of Sixth Form.

The Prefect system operates in all areas of life at King's with Head Prefects taking responsibility for sport, subjects, the library, the school council, events, charities, year groups and the Junior school. Further Prefects are then elected to work on the charity and events committees and every tutor group from Removes to Fifths is assigned at least two Form Prefects who work with the students in those tutor groups to help them with their life at school.

There are several important general principles which the Senior Prefects follow:

  • Be a role model; someone for younger pupils to aspire to be like;
  • Guide, advise and care for those in their charge;
  • Be fair, just and consistent in dealing with others;
  • Show initiative;
  • Always be in the right place at the right time.

The Prefect team undertake duties in a range of areas including assemblies, open morning, parents' evenings and lunch queues. Positions of responsibility are also assigned regarding the leading of extra-curricular, musical and sporting activities by relevant members of staff. In addition every member of the Upper Sixth is assigned a Removes student to act as a buddy throughout their first year in the school as well as writing them a letter of welcome during the summer. In this way we hope to allow all students to develop their skills as leaders and role models across the school and specifically within the Sixth Form whilst developing a greater sense of community.
