The Sixth Form is a friendly, co-educational community
with a strong sense of identity. The individual flourishes in an
environment of mutual encouragement and support. Facilities include
a lecture theatre, common room, careers library and study room.
Sixth form students are encouraged to take responsibility
for their own learning and to develop independent thought and self-discipline.
The aim is to provide appropriate academic challenge, to encourage
intellectual excitement and to help to fulfil each individual's
potential.

Students have free choice from a wide range of subjects. A games
afternoon and a programme of lectures on subjects of general interest
complement academic study. Students sit AS exams at the end of the
lower sixth and choose three or four subjects to study in the upper
sixth at A2 level. Work in school is reinforced by theatre visits
and off-site study trips, at home and abroad.

Teaching groups are small and a range of teaching styles is employed,
partly to prepare students for the less structured teaching approach
they will meet in higher education. The school provides guidance
and support in all subject areas. Form tutors are always available
to advise students in all aspects of study and personal life and
with higher education issues.

The sporting facilities of the school are enviable and students
are offered a choice of at least twelve sports on their games afternoon.
In addition there are countless opportunities for sixth formers
to take leading roles in the many cultural activities of the school.

Sixth formers lead the school and play a significant part in its
orderly running. They act as role models for younger students and
help them to run clubs. The Young Enterprise business leadership
scheme offers sixth formers opportunities for personal and collective
development. The CCF and the Duke of Edinburgh's Award Scheme give
leadership training in different contexts.
Sixth form students are encouraged to volunteer to help with community
service. Students visit the Countess of Chester hospital each week
to spend time with patients and provide them with entertainment
and conversation.
Students are encouraged to face up to the challenges
of religion and to question the nature of their own spirituality.

The school encourages students to develop an awareness
of the career and higher education opportunities available to them.
Almost all members of the Sixth Form go on to higher education.
Students are helped to acquire the knowledge, skills and attitudes
necessary to make well informed and realistic choices for the future.
Students with the ambition and commitment
to do so are encouraged to apply for places at Oxford or Cambridge
and are given help to meet the entrance requirements.
