Welcome to Drama at King’s

There are many opportunities for pupils to get involved in fantastic theatre productions, musicals, festivals, weekly drama clubs and theatre visits. There are also many opportunities to help back stage and take part in production and technical aspects of theatre work as well as taking acting roles.

At King’s we aim to create a lively interest in Drama, delivering a programme that is both challenging and enriching. This enables our students to use their creative, empathetic and communicative skills in a safe and nurturing environment, often achieving more than they ever thought possible.
Clare Howden, Director of Drama

The Vanbrugh Theatre is a wonderful asset for King’s. There are many productions and shows throughout the year, with pupils having the opportunity to get involved across all age groups. Opened by former pupil and screen and stage actor, Ronald Pickup, it is home to most of King’s drama productions. All our productions are renowned for their polish and professionalism.

Concerts, theatrical productions, daily assemblies and end-of-term Cathedral services are all opportunities for children to perform and shine.

Our young thespians also compete in Chester’s Festival of Speech and Drama, hosted by King’s, regularly winning top accolades. Pupils will also have the opportunity from September 2017 to partake in LAMDA examinations.

We also have our Sixth Form drama company, Focus Theatre, where Sixth Form students have the opportunity to act in, and even direct many top class productions. Focus Theatre have gathered quite a following, with most of their productions being a sell out as well as performing bi-annually at Edinburgh’s Fringe Festival.

In summary, the opportunities in drama at King’s are endless.
