A level Design and Technology students recently enjoyed an eye-opening visit to the DMM factory in Llanberis, allowing them to further develop their understanding of materials and manufacturing.
DMM has been established for 45 years, employing more than 200 people to develop and manufacture climbing equipment and products for industrial markets.
During the visit, pupils learned how aluminium and steel are transformed into high-performance equipment for climbing and working at height. They observed a wide range of processes central to their studies, including forging, heat treatment and CNC machining, seeing first-hand how traditional skills and modern technology combine in contemporary manufacturing.
DMM were outstanding hosts, offering expert guidance and generous access to their facilities. Students were even able to assist with assembling finished products and each received a small factory-made gift to take home.
The visit was organised and accompanied by Head of Design and Technology, Richard Curtis. He said: “Visits such as this enrich classroom learning and are invaluable in helping students understand how design ideas become real, working products.
“It was clear that the students got a lot out of the visit and I am already looking forward to bringing next year’s Lower Sixth for a visit when I hope they will get a glimpse of the entire process from design to manufacture.”
