On Saturday, 28 February, the third annual King’s Model United Nations (KSCMUN) conference was held on the theme of Global Security and Stability, welcoming more than 100 delegates from six schools for a day of lively debate.
KSCMUN 2026 was opened by Secretary General, Rachel Joseph (L6DUT) who introduced the conference’s keynote speaker, Veronica Stratford-Tuke.
Veronica joined the conference by video to talk about her career in the FCO and, more recently, in the charity sector where she currently works as Head of Peace Economies at International Alert.
Delegates were interested to hear about Veronica’s experiences of working in different countries but they were most struck by her reflections on the importance of building economies for peace and security.
In their committees, delegates debated issues as wide ranging as young people’s use of social media (Youth Committee) and stratospheric aerosol injections (EnviroSci Committee).
This year’s conference also saw the introduction of the Historical Security Committee which debated the 17th Century issue of Swedish intervention in the Thirty Years War, adding an extra element to the day and giving KSCMUN the opportunity to welcome delegates representing the likes of the Holy Roman Empire and Kingdom of Bohemia.
Mrs Collier is the coordinator of MUN at King’s and she congratulated the committee chairs and delegates on a successful conference.
She said: “This year’s conference has been a huge success and that is in no small way thanks to the dedication, hard work and impeccable organisation of Rachel, April and their team.
“MUN is so important as it requires young people to not just to research and understand global issues, but to see them through the eyes of other nations and other people. I believe that this is more important today than ever before and it has been a joy to spend the day with so many young people who feel the same.
“Thank you to the delegates from Wrekin College, Merchant Taylors’ School, Wirral Grammar School for Girls, Ellesmere College and the Queen’s School Chester for joining us at KSCMUN and making it such a success.”
