Bursaries are currently available for pupils entering Senior School in Removes (Year 7) and in Sixth Form.

Important: Bursaries are means-tested and typically available to families with a gross annual household income below £60,000. Other factors such as assets, expenditure, and overall financial circumstances are also assessed. Meeting the criteria does not guarantee an award due to high demand and limited funds. This means that parents will be asked to contribute to fees if their disposable income is sufficient. The decision on the allocation and awarding of bursaries is final and there is no right of appeal. Applications for bursaries are accepted on this basis.

Bursary Application Process for Entry to King’s Senior School (Year 7) for September 2027 

The deadline for Year 7 bursary applications is Monday, September 28, 2026.

The bursary process at The King’s School assesses two key areas: 

• Academic ability, based on performance in the Bursary Entrance Assessment
• Financial eligibility for means-tested support (e.g. household income, expenditure, assets) 

Bursary funding is limited each year. If the number of applicants exceeds the available funds, bursaries will be awarded based on Entrance Exam rankings, starting from the highest-scoring applicants, until all funds are allocated. 
(Please note, the amount of bursary support awarded is determined solely by financial need) 

The Bursary Entrance Assessment, which all bursary applicants will sit in October 2026 (exact date TBC) identifies the top-performing applicants whose academic ability is in line with previous successful bursary candidates. 

The top-performing applicants in this test will then proceed to the Financial Review stage. The number of applicants progressed to this next stage will be based on the funding available for that year.  

Following the Financial Review and an informal interview with the Head, families will be informed if they qualify for means-tested support. To help families plan their finances, the exact bursary amount will be confirmed by January 2027. 

Key dates for entry to King’s Senior School (Year 7): 

• Monday, September 28, 2026 – Deadline for all bursary applications 
• October 2026 (exact date TBC) – All bursary applicants to sit the Bursary Pre-Entrance Assessment, to be held at The King’s School  
• October-November – Top performing candidates to progress to the Financial Review stage and attend an informal interview with the Headmaster 
• January 2027 – Amount of bursary award confirmed

Bursary Application Process for Entry to King’s Sixth Form for September 2027 

The deadline for Year 12 bursary applications is Monday, September 28, 2026.

You should complete an application form, ensuring that you tick the “bursary application” box. A bursary form will then be sent to you, along with guidance on the financial documentation required. 

The form with all supporting financial documentation must be received by the school by the deadline of September 28.

Next steps: 

• Complete our online application form: King’s Registration Form – The King’s School Chester 

• We will send you a link to a secure financial assessment portal (please note that all financial assessments for Sixth Form bursaries are carried out by a third-party organisation) 

• All financial documentation should be complete and submitted by Monday, September 28, 2026 

• In the meantime, we will request predicted GCSE grades and a reference from your child’s current school 

• Interviews will be held at The King’s School on Friday, January 15, 2026
