Gallery: Women who inspire us

To mark International Women’s Day this year, Junior School pupils were tasked with creating a poster to celebrate a woman who inspires them.

The response was incredible and it was wonderful to see so many brilliant women represented. Some of them are famous, some are not. Some are from a long time ago and others are still doing brilliant things today. They are athletes, scientists, activists, writers, artists, singers, business women, trailblazers and more.

Many pupils chose members of their own families, including great grandmothers who worked during World War II, mums who make them laugh, aunties who work hard, and grandmas who always have a smile on their face.

J2 teacher Mrs Benson was responsible for setting the task and has been inspired herself by the hundreds of posters she received from pupils.

She said: “I have really enjoyed looking through the posters that the children created for this task and I have learned a lot about inspirational women I previously knew little or nothing about.

“It is clear that the children put a great deal of thought into their posters; they thought about what is important to them and each of them had very personal and special reasons for choosing their inspirational woman. I was also hugely impressed with the creativity on show. Some of the posters were, quite simply, works of art!”

The top five inspirational women chosen by Junior School pupils were:

  1. Mary Anning, Paleontologist
  2. Marie Curie, Scientist
  3. Rosa Parks, Civil Rights Activist
  4. Florence Nightingale, Nurse and Social Reformer / Amelia Earhart, Aviation Pioneer
  5. Mary Earps, England Footballer

Below are some of the pupils with their posters and their reason for choosing their inspirational woman.
