King’s is immensely proud to celebrate the remarkable achievements of former pupil Vimal Yoganathan (OKS 2021), whose football journey has taken him from school pitches to one of the most iconic stadiums in world football when he stepped on to the Anfield pitch to play for Barnsley in the third round of the FA Cup.
Vimal left King’s in 2021 to pursue his football career, having progressed through the Junior School before moving into the Senior School. From an early age, his talent, determination and humility set him apart.
Richard Lunn, Director of Sport at King’s, said: “Vimal joined us in Junior School and continued his development into the Seniors, and even then we all knew he would ‘make it’ in the world of football. His dedication and attitude were exceptional, and everyone at King’s is incredibly proud of what he has gone on to achieve.”
Vimal has already made history as the first player of Sri Lankan Tamil descent to both play and score for a professional club in the UK, a landmark moment for representation in football and an inspiration to young players from all backgrounds.
Vimal’s career came full circle in January when he started for Barnsley against Liverpool at Anfield in the FA Cup, the very club where his professional journey began.
Having been scouted by Liverpool at just six years old, Vimal officially joined the club’s academy two years later and spent seven years developing on Merseyside. During that time, he was also a ball boy at Anfield, watching from the sidelines and dreaming of one day playing on the famous pitch.
Now aged 20, that dream became reality as he stepped out on Monday, 12 Jan January in front of more than 60,000 supporters at one of football’s most historic grounds.
Reflecting on the experience, Vimal said on social media: “From ball boying to playing at Anfield was nothing but crazy. Enjoyed the night, unfortunate result but more than proud of the boys. Support was unbelievable from the travelling supporters.”
After spending last season on loan at Oldham Athletic, where he helped the club secure promotion back to the English Football League via the National League play-offs, Vimal returned to Barnsley this season.
He has since impressed fans and coaches alike with his performances in midfield, showing maturity beyond his years and continuing to develop at senior level.
From Wrexham Road to Anfield, Vimal Yoganathan’s story is one of ambition realised and history made and the King’s community will continue to follow his journey with pride!
