Rowing Club BBQ 2023 and Alumni Races

The end of term Rowing Club BBQ at The King’s School in Chester was an exciting and eventful evening that gave athletes, parents and alumni an opportunity to come together and enjoy good food, good company and to support a series of races.

The first race of the evening was between the Girls’ Alumnae and the School VIII, with the Alumnae winning by a close margin. Next, the Staff VIII competed against the School VIII with the Staff team emerging as winners for the second consecutive year. Following that, the Boys’ Alumni narrowly defeated the school’s VIII.

During the event, five athletes were recognised for their dedication and contribution to the club over the past five years. Ted Arnold, Luke Dillon, Isabel Sykes, George Munday, and James Jacobs received their full club colours, acknowledging their commitment and hard work.

A highlight of the evening was the naming of the new club 1st VIII. Neville Orme had the honour of naming the boat the Neville Orme II in front of a crowd of more than 150 alumni, parents, coaches, and athletes.

To conclude the evening, 16 parent and child coxed fours participated in a fun regatta, providing an exciting end to the season.

David Blackham, Director of Rowing, thanked everyone for helping to mark in the conclusion of the 2022-2023 season.

He said: “It has been wonderful to see the return of familiar faces, parents and athletes tonight. The evening’s racing was fantastic, and the presence of Neville Orme added an extra touch of excitement and nostalgia for many in attendance.”
