Arthur hits the top notes

Congratulations to Arthur Crewe (U6GLA) who has been offered a full scholarship to study Tuba at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London.

Arthur will begin his studies in September, marking the next exciting step in his musical journey and setting him on the right path to fulfil his dream to become a professional orchestral musician.

Arthur began playing following a demonstration from the Brass teacher in a Junior School assembly when he was in J2 (Year 4).

Arthur recalled: “I only picked the Tuba because a friend dared me to choose the biggest instrument! At the time, my Mum drove a Fiat 500 so she wasn’t very impressed at all but it’s a decision that I have never regretted.”

Under the tutelage of Tom Wyss at King’s, the same teacher he has had since J2, Arthur has developed into a highly versatile and incredibly talented player who has gone on to study A level music and play an important role in the musical life of the school

He is a key member of many ensembles in school, including Symphony Orchestra, Concert Band and Brass Quintet. Crediting his experience at King’s for helping him hone his skills and grow in confidence, Arthur is grateful for the numerous opportunities he has had in school to make music with others.

Outside of school, Arthur’s musical commitments make for highly impressive reading: Principal Tuba at the Liverpool Philharmonic Youth Orchestra, Tuba in the Liverpool Philharmonic Youth Brass Band, and Eb Bass in the National Youth Brass Band of Great Britain where he has taken the second seat after just one course with the prestigious ensemble. In addition, Arthur has enjoyed playing  Eb Bass with the Royal Buckley Town Brass Band for just over a year.

Arthur is excited to begin studying at Guildhall. He said: “I cannot wait to be in London. I know that the opportunities I will have to make music will be second to none.

“The one-to-one tuition offered at Guildhall is world-class and I am looking forward to growing even more as a musician. My aim is to play professionally in one of the big orchestras and I feel that there is no better place to be if I am to fulfil that ambition.

“I am very grateful to everyone at King’s who has helped me reach this stage with my music, especially Mr Ortiz who leads Concert Band as he gave me some great advice for my application.”

We wish Arthur all the best at Guildhall; his commitment, dedication, work ethic and incredible talent all mean that we can expect to hear much more from him in the years to come.
