Huge congratulations to two Removes pupils who proudly represented The King’s School at the 2026 Modern Foreign Languages National Spelling Bee Final, held at the University of Cambridge on 23 June.
After progressing from an incredible 15,000 entrants nationwide, Ariella Roe (RMJR) and Eric Villarin-Forro (RMSC) earned their places among just 97 national finalists, competing in German against children from all corners of the UK.
The competition challenged students to translate English words into German and spell them aloud accurately, in just 60 seconds. It is a demanding test of vocabulary, pronunciation, quick thinking and composure under pressure.
The pupils prepared for the competition with the help of Mr Bircham, who organised a weekly German Spelling Bee club.
He said: “Following months of dedicated preparation, both pupils really rose to the occasion.
“Despite the inevitable nerves of performing on a national stage, they did an impressive job of demonstrating their impressive linguistic skill and confidence in front of a packed audience of fellow competitors, teachers and parents.”
“Although they narrowly missed out on the top four places, reaching the National Final is an exceptional achievement that Ariella and Eric can be very proud of.”
