Careers Breakfast: Academic Scientific Research

Thank you to Dr Ruth Taylor for an interesting Careers Breakfast about her career in academic scientific research.

Ruth currently works at the University of Chester as a Senior Lecturer in Neuroscience and she was keen to explain that anyone can go into academic research at any stage of their life.

Ruth answered many questions from interested pupils about her own career path and about neuroscience research in general. They were particularly interested to hear about the similarities between human and rat brains!

Pupils were also interested to learn that languages can be extremely useful in a research degree, and that working for a university often carries the benefit of a public sector pension.

Head of Futures, Clare Holland, thanked Ruth for her insight. She said: “What was very clear from Ruth’s talk this morning was something that I always tell students – careers are squiggly and very rarely follow a straight path!”

Our next Careers Breakfast will be on Friday, 27 February with Ryan Sweetnam, a solicitor who spends his time dealing with complex fraud litigation, including the recovery of crypto assets. Senior School pupils can sign up now on SOCS.
