Careers Breakfast: Quantity Surveying with Chris Palmer

Many thanks to Chris Palmer from Read Construction for his interesting careers talk about Quantity Surveying.

Chris is a Senior Quantity Surveyor and gave an overview of the sector, as well as information about some of the projects that he and his company have worked on, including The Islands at Chester Zoo and the current redevelopment of Northgate Arena.

Pupils in attendance were interested to hear about the wide-ranging role of a quantity surveyor from complying with environmental and health and safety legislation to managing large budgets.

Talking about routes into the sector, Chris praised the advantages of the degree apprenticeship programme that he followed at Read but also mentioned colleagues who had followed different pathways, including traditional university degrees and HNCs and HNDs.

Head of Futures, Rachel Hughes, thanked Chris for a very information session.

She said: “Pupils gained an excellent introduction into quantity surveying this morning and I am very grateful to Chris for an interesting and engaging talk.

“Applications for degree apprenticeships at Read are now open and I will share the information and link with current Upper Sixth pupils so that they can look into the opportunity further if they wish.”

Next week’s Careers Breakfast will be with former pupil Jamie Jenkins (OKS 2003), Barrister and part-time Judge, who will be talking about careers in the legal sector. All senior school pupils can sign up now on SOCS.
