Careers Breakfast: Will Scott (OKS 2007), Tech and Enterprise Sales

It was a pleasure to welcome former King’s student Will Scott (OKS 2007) for our final careers breakfast of the academic year.

Will has worked in tech sales for more than 13 years and students were interested to hear about his varied career path and his insights into the sector.

Will has a wealth of experience working for large tech companies such as LinkedIn and Figma, as well as in small start-ups, and talked about how important it is that a sales person understands and believes in the product they are selling.

Stressing that specific qualifications aren’t as important as soft skills such as communication and teamwork, he also outlined the skills and attributes that make a good sales person, and dispelled some common myths about sales; a good sales person is a good listener and helps people find solutions to their problems.

As well as his experience in sales, Will is also passionate about flexible working and, together with a fellow King’s alumnus, founded a company to help people find work that doesn’t fit the standard 9-5, 5-day week. Working with household names such as Deutsche Bank and AXA, WorkYourWay has grown to become the UK’s leading jobs platform for flexible job-seekers.

Will left students with some nuggets of sound advice; speak to other sales people about their careers, join online sales communities and start to build a presence on LinkedIn.

Head of Careers, Dr Hensman, thanked Will for his time this morning.

He said: “It was fantastic to hear from Will today about his career in tech sales. There is no set pathway into a sales career and I know that students benefited today from hearing about his experiences, and listening to his advice.

“It is really valuable for students to hear from our Alumni and I am always grateful to them for giving up their time to speak to current students and for the networking and mentoring opportunities that they provide.”
