Celebrating the start of summer around the May Pole

Is there a more British tradition than May Pole dancing on the first day of May?

That’s exactly how our infants spent the day as, under the guidance of a professional dancer, they welcomed in the summer around the May Pole in Willow Lodge hall.

The children enjoyed working together in their class groups and, after picking up the basics in an impressively short time, they quickly moved on to more advanced skills such as weaves and reversing their dances to unwind the ribbons.

Deputy Head of Willow Lodge, Hannah Gardiner, was very impressed with the dancing. She said: “The children had great fun around the May Pole today and it was wonderful to see all of our classes having a go.

“As well as learning about – and celebrating – a great British tradition, the children were, without realising it, also practising key skills such as maths, problem solving, and teamwork. They all worked incredibly hard to keep their rhythm, count their steps and create patterns.”
