Celebrating women in Economics - The King's School Chester

Celebrating women in Economics

On the eve of International Women’s Day 2023, the Economics department hosted two former King’s students to talk about their careers as recent Economics graduates.

The two alumnae appeared via video link in Old Library where current Lower Sixth Economists were poised with questions for the women.

Shriya Palakurthi (L6GLA) chaired the session, introducing each of the women and taking questions from the floor.

The event was organised by Head of Business and Economics, Stephen Walton.

He said: “Women are still underrepresented in Economics so it is important to give our current students the opportunity to hear from those women who have been successful at university and are now pursuing their careers.”

The first of our speakers was Smruthya Ganeshram (OKS 2019) who now works as a Graduate Analyst at Berenberg Capital Markets. She told students that, despite only one third of students on her course being female, it never held her back.

Our second speaker, Saiorse Nyhan (OKS 2016), studied Management and Economics at the University of Oxford before completing a Masters in Business Analytics in China. She now works as an Investment Banking Analyst at J.P.Morgan and emphasised the importance of women’s networks in the sector.

She said: “Women’s networks are invaluable. Get involved with their events as they are designed to encourage greater diversity and inclusion in investment banking.”

Mr Walton thanked both former students for their time and their advice to our young economists.
