Commended for EDI in Independent Schools of the Year Awards

We are delighted to share that The King’s School Chester has been commended in the Independent Schools of the Year Awards for Diversity, Equality, Inclusion and Justice (DEIJ), recognising the school’s commitment to building an inclusive community where every individual is valued and respected.

This recognition is a celebration of how DEIJ has become part of everyday life at King’s. Guided by pupil voice and supported by dedicated staff, our approach goes beyond individual events to create lasting cultural change. From our pupil-led EDI group and popular Culture Week, to the use of restorative approaches and ongoing curriculum development, pupils are given meaningful opportunities to celebrate diversity, challenge prejudice and become active allies.

Over the past year, we have continued to strengthen our work through initiatives including our work on anti-racism, inclusive language training, curriculum review and improvements to school policies and facilities. These initiatives, alongside pupil-led assemblies, awareness campaigns and workshops, all have the same aim; a school with empathy and respect at its heart where everyone belongs.

Emily Higgins, Diversity and Inclusion Coordinator at The King’s School Chester, is proud of this achievement: “We’re absolutely delighted to have received this commendation. It’s a real reflection of the passion and commitment of our whole school community, especially our pupils, who continue to lead so much of this work.

“One of the things I’m most proud of is that our DEIJ work isn’t something that happens in isolation or on one particular day, it has become part of everyday life at King’s. There’s always more we can learn, and we’re committed to creating a community where everyone feels they belong and has the confidence to be themselves.”

The finalists of the Independent School of the Year Awards will be announced in September, with the awards ceremony taking place in London in October.
