Congratulations to James Ashcroft (L6DUT) and Olivia Das (U6WAL) who recently competed in the final of the Oxford Schools Debate Competition.
James and Olivia qualified for the final at the Northwest regional round in February, and travelled to Oxford to debate against more than 100 teams in the final.
Ms Rutberg runs the Senior Debating Society and travelled with the students to the final.
She said: “This is an international competition with teams from countries around the world, as well as UK teams of older and more experienced debaters.
“James and Olivia more than held their own in their debates and should be very proud of themselves. What an incredible experience for them both!”
All teams took part in four initial debates, each of which was judged by Oxford students, who gave valuable feedback to the debaters.
The motions debated by James and Olivia are listed below:
Round 1: This house, as an author from a marginalized background, would choose to write hopeful stories that emphasize resilience and community rather than focusing on oppression and suffering.
Round 2: In areas of socioeconomic deprivation, this house would prioritise training students in vocational skills as opposed to traditional academic subjects.
Round 3: This house believes that the narrative that society has failed boys and men has done more harm that good.
Round 4: This house believes that European political parties should adopt Cordon Sanitaire.
Debating Society meets on Tuesday lunchtimes. Pupils can sign up on SOCS.
