Congratulations to Megan Howe-Thatcher (L6GRO), Samya Saha (L6WAL) and Millie Collings (L6LES) who are through to the next round of the English Speaking Union (ESU) Schools’ Mace.
The ESU’s Schools’ Mace is the oldest and largest debating competition for schools in England. It aims to give students the opportunity to hone skills in debate, speechwriting, public speaking and critical thinking.
In their competition, which took place on Zoom, Megan, Samya and Millie proposed the motion: This house believes that the sale and consumption of meat should be banned.
The team was successful in advancing the motion and they now progress to the semi-final which will take place in front of an audience in January 2023.
Ms Rutberg runs the Senior Debating Society at King’s and is very proud of the girls’ success.
She said: “This is the first competition that this team has taken part in and I am delighted that their diligent preparation and hard work has paid off.
“One of the judges described them as the standout team in the competition, which I absolutely agree with.
“The girls have gained huge confidence from this win and are excited about the next round.”
Through its affiliate scheme, the ESU aims to raise the profile of oracy in schools and since gaining ESU Affiliate School status last year, attendance at the weekly Debate Society has grown.
Senior Debating Society for Fourths (year 10) and upwards is led by Ms Rutberg and takes place every Tuesday lunchtime.
Debate Club for Removes – Thirds (year 7 – year 9) is led by Mrs McNabb and takes place every Wednesday lunchtime.
