Gallery: Easter fun in Spain

Over the Easter break, a group of pupils in Fourths and above immersed themselves in Spanish language and culture during a five day trip to the northern city of A Coruña.

Mornings were spent in Spanish lessons where pupils enjoyed the opportunity to expand on their classroom learning at King’s, particularly embracing the opportunity to practise their spoken Spanish.

One pupil said: “We definitely learned things that we wouldn’t have learned in normal lessons. We had fun in the lessons and, because we were only allowed to speak in Spanish, it really helped us improve our vocabulary.”

Afternoon activities included a very popular tapas workshop where pupils discovered previously untapped culinary expertise, as well as a football match against a local team, which gave pupils an invaluable opportunity to meet and chat to local teenagers.

The group also enjoyed an excursion to the famous Santiago di Compostela where they visited the stunning Cathedral and enjoyed tasting the local delicacy, tarta di Santiago.

Food featured heavily in the pupils’ trip highlights. As they grew in confidence, they enjoyed ordering their own meals in restaurants, becoming fond of raciones, the large sharing platters of typical dishes such as tortilla and calamari.

Unfortunately for the group, the Easter processions were rained off but the wet weather didn’t dampen the pupils’ spirits and they returned to King’s with many stories to tell about their week in Spain.

The trip was organised and led by MFL teacher, Miss Higgins.

She said: “We had a fabulous few days in Coruña. The pupils were great, really throwing themselves in to the lessons and making the most of every opportunity to practise their Spanish skills.

“It was fantastic to see them grow in confidence throughout the week and nothing makes a language teacher prouder than overhearing your pupils using their Spanish real-life situations.”
