Gallery: May Pole dancing to welcome the summer

Last week, pupils in Willow Lodge gathered around the May Pole to welcome in the summer in a traditionally British way.

Under the guidance of a professional dancer, the children enjoyed working together to learn the art of May Pole dancing.

Impressed with how quickly they picked up the basics, the teacher allowed them to progress to more advanced skills such as complex weaves, and reversing their dances to unwind the ribbons.

Deputy Head of Willow Lodge, Hannah Gardiner, said: “How fitting that the sun was shining today as the children enjoyed learning all about the tradition of the May Pole.

“As well as enjoying the dancing, the children were – without even realising – also sharpening key skills such as maths, problem solving and teamwork. They all worked incredibly hard to keep their rhythm, count their steps and create patterns.”
