Flying the Green Flag for King’s

We are thrilled to announce that The King’s School Chester has been awarded the prestigious Eco-Schools Green Flag Award, recognising our commitment to sustainability, environmental action, and whole-school collaboration.

This incredible achievement was made possible through true whole-school collaboration thanks to members of our Eco-Committee, which includes pupils aged 4 – 18, who worked together to enact meaningful change across the school.

As they prepared to work towards Eco-Schools Green Flag status, members of Eco Committee identified four key areas on which to focus:

  • Litter and Waste: Pupils led clean-up campaigns, improved recycling systems, and raised awareness about reducing single-use plastics.
  • Biodiversity: Students planted wildflowers, built bug hotels, and created habitats to support local wildlife.
  • Improving School Grounds: From sensory gardens to outdoor classrooms, our grounds were transformed into greener, more inclusive spaces.
  • Energy Use: Eco teams promoted energy-saving habits and explored ways to reduce our carbon footprint.

Senior School teacher, Mrs Aldridge is one of the members of staff who facilitates eco-committee meetings. She said: “The Green Flag Award is not just a recognition of environmental improvements, it’s a celebration of teamwork, leadership, and student voice.

“The Eco Committee reps from Willow Lodge, Juniors, Senior School and Sixth Form met every half term to share ideas and inspire each other to take action.”

As a result of their discussions, the Eco Committee collaborated to create the school’s very own Green Code.

Mrs Aldridge again: “The Green Code is essentially a set of guiding principles that reflect our shared values and environmental goals, and it now serves as a daily reminder of our responsibility to care for our planet and each other.”

The hard work and collaboration of the Eco Committee were praised by the Green Flag Team who conferred the award on The King’s School.

Feeding back on the application for Green Flag status, they said: “We were impressed that the Eco-Schools project ran as a whole school initiative from EYFS to Year 13 – a tremendous undertaking.

“We were pleased to read that the school has substantially reduced its energy usage, partly due to conservation awareness and partly due to updating lights to LED which dim when they do not pick up movement.

“The planting of four wildflower meadows, and the addition of five insect hotels have been monumental in providing food and shelter for pollinating insects and birds.”

Along with Mrs Aldridge, the Eco Committee is also helped by two teachers from other areas of the school; Mr Blakemore from Willow Lodge and Miss Davies from The Junior School.

On receiving the news that King’s had achieved Eco-Schools Green Flag status, they said: “Thank you – and congratulations – to all of the pupils who contributed to this amazing achievement; we are proud of all of you.

“We would also like to thank our school leadership team, as well as our brilliant Facilities and Grounds teams for supporting our initiatives and making this possible.”
