Gallery: Juniors get to grips with nature

On Wednesday, 24 January, pupils in J1 and J2 were treated to a hands-on nature experience with Wildlife Manager, Steve McGuigan.

The topic was all things Barn Owls, with the pupils learning about the bird’s natural habitat, the way they hunt for their food, what they eat and how they survive in the wild.

The pupils were then handed owl pellets, getting their hands dirty as they dissected and investigated their contents.

Using magnifying tools, the children found that the pellets contained a variety of fascinating items including small animal skulls, bones, fur, teeth and even small, wriggling caterpillars.

The day was organised by J1 teacher, Haydn Duncalf.

He said: “The children have really enjoyed their hands-on experience today, doing a great job of identifying many of the small fragments contained in the owl pellets.

“We are really grateful to Mr McGuigan from Cheshire Wildlife Management for bringing in the pellets and sharing his expertise with the children. He has certainly enthused them to learn more about wildlife.”
