On 24 November, the chess team travelled to Bolton School to take part in the first round of the English Chess Federation Schools’ Competition.
Weeks of training under Chess Coordinator Mr Wilcock paid off as the team, led by Captain Tanmay Madhusudhan (3GRO), returned victorious.
Tanmay was joined by team regulars Harry Rafferty (4GLA, not pictured) and Lucas Potrykus (3FOX), along with new members Jack Lally (U6DUT), Diego Venturi (3LES) and Dev Varma (RMRA, not pictured).
The competition was an intense three-match qualifier that saw King’s as joint top scorers after beating Bolton 6-0 and defeating Wilmslow. In a final tense match, the King’s team drew with MGS A-team to secure their place in the next round.
Tanmay was proud of the team’s performance: “We have a good team and we played well today.
“Over the years, King’s has regularly taken part in the national final at Uppingham and I am certain that we have the strength and depth to get there again this year.”
Good luck to the team in the next round.
