King’s pupils shine at MUN Conference

On Saturday, 15 November, sixteen delegates from The King’s School attended the fifth annual Queen’s School MUN Conference, pitting their debating and negotiating skills against schools from around the country.

Representing the United Kingdom and Canada on a number of different committees, issues for debate and discussion included media censorship by governments, the funding of ethical aid in fragile economies, and safeguarding civilian human rights in areas of conflict.

Of the sixteen delegates from King’s, Lower Sixth pupils Rachel Joseph (L6DUT) and Dhyan Vysakh (L6WAL) took on coveted Guest Chair positions, leading the debate and supporting delegates in two of the day’s committees.

Corrissa Collier is the MUN coordinator at King’s and is delighted that so many students attended this weekend’s conference.

She said: “Model United Nations gives students a unique opportunity to research and view a global issue from a different perspective. As such, it’s a great way for students to develop important skills of empathy, negotiation and compromise, as well as public speaking and debate.

“MUN is really growing in popularity at King’s and we had students at QMUN from Fourths, Fifths and Sixth Form, with three of them receiving commended or highly commended certificates for their outstanding contributions.”

Attention now turns to our own KingsMUN in February which will see King’s students will step up to organise every element of the conference as we look forward to welcoming a number of schools to KingsMUN for a day of lively debate.
