King’s School pupils triumph in Cheshire Schools’ Book Quiz

Avid readers Joe and Enzo put their literary knowledge to the test at the recent Cheshire Schools’ Book Quiz, and were delighted to return to school with the (impressively large) winners trophy.

Organised by the Cheshire Education Library Service and hosted by reigning champions, Weaverham High School, Joe and Enzo took on teams from around the county.

To the excitement of the pupils and adults, the event was opened by author Alice Nuttall, who gave an interesting talk about her latest novel, The Zombie Project. The young readers – and writers – in the room were fascinated to hear about her writing process, and how she finds inspirations to write about zombies.

Joe and Enzo were accompanied by Head Librarian, Jodie Brooks. Miss Brooks said: “This is the first time we have won the Cheshire Schools’ Book Quiz since 2015, and to achieve it with a team of two is incredible!

“Joe and Enzo were superb; they were unstoppable against bigger teams of three and four pupils, and even some teams with older pupils.

“Their win today is born of their love of reading and even I was impressed by some of the answers they gave.”

2026 is the National Year of Reading and The King’s School Chester has been celebrating with schools across the country.

Miss Brooks again: “This is a wonderful trophy to be able to display in the library in the National Year of Reading and I am very proud of Joe and Enzo on their achievement.”

Joe and Enzo’s success is a wonderful reminder of the power of reading for pleasure. At King’s, we champion regular reading as it not only broadens vocabulary and general knowledge but also develops critical thinking, empathy, confidence and curiosity – skills that helped them excel in the competition and will benefit them far beyond the classroom.
