On Saturday, 25 November, just two weeks after our inaugural Model United Nations (MUN) Conference, 16 delegates from King’s took part in Q-MUN-3, the annual MUN conference at The Queen’s School Chester.
Representing the USA, Australia and Thailand on six different committees, the issues for debate and discussion included the repatriation of cultural property, the use of deepfakes during elections and energy security in the 21st Century.
MUN gives students a unique opportunity to research and view a global issue from a perspective which they may not have considered before.
Alongside 12 Sixth Form students, four pupils from Fourths attended, some of them making their MUN debut and holding their own against experienced Sixth Form MUNers from 15 schools across the North West and Jersey.
In addition to our 16 delegates, Emily Rafferty (U6GLA) was accepted for one of the coveted Guest Chair positions, helping to run the Health Committee.
Following the conclusion of the day’s debating, Ife Oyedeji (L6LES) was Highly Commended for her superb performance representing Thailand in the Special Committee on The Issue of the Repatriation of Cultural Property, and Head of School Charlie Marshall (U6LES) was declared the Outstanding Delegate for the Political Committee, in which he also represented Thailand.
Assistant Head Pastoral, Stephen Prest, leads King’s MUN Society alongside Corrissa Collier.
He said: “It has been wonderful to bring 16 delegates plus a Guest Chair to this conference.
“Following on from our own conference two weeks ago in which nearly 30 students took part as delegates or chairs, this is further evidence of the enthusiasm for Model United Nations which exists at King’s.
“I am particularly pleased with the number of younger pupils attending as we look forward to attending MGSMUN in December, before we move on to Stonyhurst MUN in the new year.”
MUN meets on Thursday after school and is open to all students from Fourths upwards.
