Lower Sixth students step into the world of particle physics

On Monday, 13 April, seventeen Lower Sixth physicists spent an inspiring day at the University of Manchester for a Particle Physics Masterclass, gaining first-hand insight into modern physics research.

The morning began with a series of engaging lectures before students took on the role of particle physicists themselves, working through a hands-on data analysis activity to reconstruct unstable D-mesons from real experimental data. This practical session offered a valuable glimpse into how scientists interpret the results of high-energy collisions and identify short-lived particles.

The visit also included a tour of the university’s laboratories, where cutting-edge detector research and development is underway for experiments at CERN. Students saw how new technologies are designed, tested and refined before being deployed in some of the world’s most advanced scientific facilities.

The day concluded with a live video link to the ATLAS experiment control room at CERN, providing a fascinating behind-the-scenes look at one of the largest scientific collaborations in the world.

Head of Physics, Dr Bosworth, accompanied the group to Manchester.

He said: “We had a great day in Manchester, giving the students an insight into at a top university’s Physics department. As well as giving them a taste of university-level teaching, this was also a great opportunity for students to extend their classroom learning.

“A highlight was undoubtably the live video link to the control room at CERN, which left students feeling inspired and well-prepared for our annual visit to CERN in December.”
