Maths Challenge: pupils jump into the second round

Congratulations to nine Shells pupils who jumped into the second round – known as the Junior Kangaroo – of the 2026 Junior Maths Challenge.

The Junior Kangaroo is the follow-up round to the Junior Maths Challenge completed by Shells pupils earlier this year. Those with a score of 80 or above in the initial competition qualified for the Kangaroo, representing a small proportion of pupils across the country.

Maths teacher, Frankie Richards, congratulated the pupils on their success.

She said: “I am so proud of these pupils. They did exceptionally well to qualify for the second round and they achieved some brilliant scores in the Kangaroo.

“Oscar and Katie both sored over 100, which is an incredible achievement.”

Maths competitions are open to all pupils at King’s, offering invaluable opportunities for pupils to extend their learning beyond the curriculum. Designed to encourage mathematical reasoning, precision of thought and fluency, competitions are an excellent way to help pupils develop advanced skills and become excited about maths.
