Matt named in Elite GB Squad after World Champion success

Matt Willis (OKS 2018) continued an incredible run of success with an impressive win for Great Britain in the Junior Men’s category of the Fyn ITU Multisport World Championships Festival held in Denmark, in July.

The race consisted of a 5.5 km run, 20 km bike and 2.5 km run, and Matt used his trademark speed over the final run to be named ITU Duathlon World Junior Champion.

The win came a week after his first ETU Triathlon Junior European Cup Gold medal at Holten, Netherlands, the previous weekend. This marked Matt’s first junior international gold after a series of magnificent results on the youth circuit.

All this success has resulted in Matt being named in the Great Britain Elite Squad for the ITU World Triathlon Championships in Australia next month, after winning the elite junior qualifying race in London on Sunday 5 August. Matt will join a squad of 34 elite athletes for the Grand Final on the Gold Coast, from 14-16 September. The squad, which includes senior, under 23 and junior athletes as well as paratriathletes, will return to the same course that hosted the Commonwealth Games at the start of the season in April.

Congratulations and good luck to Matt, we will all be cheering you on next month!
