Infants welcome in summer around the May Pole

Last week, pupils in Willow Lodge heralded the beginning of summer in a traditionally British way as they gathered around the May Pole.

Under the guidance of a professional dancer, the children enjoyed working together to learn the art of May Pole dancing.

Impressed with how quickly they picked up the basics, the teacher allowed them to progress to more advanced skills such as complex weaves, and reversing their dances to unwind the ribbons.

Deputy Head of Willow Lodge, Hannah Gardiner, said: “The children had great fun around the May Pole today and it was wonderful to see all of our classes having a go.

“As well as learning about – and celebrating – a great British tradition, the children also sharpened key skills such as maths, problem solving and team work. They all worked incredibly hard to keep their rhythm, count their steps and create patterns.”
