National Reading Championship Quiz

On Monday, 4 March, twelve students from Junior School and Senior School travelled to Birkenhead School to compete in the regional round of the National Reading Championship Quiz.

The annual event is organised by the National Literacy Trust and aims to celebrate reading culture within schools and encourage reading for pleasures, reading diversity and the development of reading stamina.

A total of 23 teams from 13 schools across Merseyside and Manchester took part in the quiz which required students to use their wide range of book and author knowledge. With a history of performing well in the competition, the avid readers hoped to repeat the success of previous years.

Congratulations to King’s Seniors Team A (pictured left) who won the competition and will now compete in the national final in London in June.

The winning team comprised of Eva, Prisha, Isobel and Yinnes from Thirds. Eva and Yinnes will be making their second appearance in the national finals after also qualifying in the last year’s competition.

The King’s Junior Team also had cause to celebrate as they were the top scoring primary school team, finishing in an impressive fifth place overall. Congratulations to team members Alex, Ted, Tegan and Anna from J4.

King’s Seniors Team B was made up of Removes pupils Clara, Elliot, Viona and George who put in a solid performance, coming in at joint seventh.

Head Librarian, Jodie Brooks, accompanied the students to Birkenhead and was very proud of all three teams.

She said: “Today was a wonderful celebration of books and reading and all three King’s teams did really well. I’m looking forward to the final in London as it’s always such a fun day.”

Good luck to Prisha, Eva, Yinnes and Isobel in June.
